Expats hailed! Foreigners living in Thailand called "heroes" for leading the way in Thai tourism recovery

Channel 3 recognised the role of foreigners living in Thailand for helping lead the way in the recovery of Thai tourism.

Along with Thai domestic tourists they recognised expats as "heroes" in their print headline on a story about a year since Covid struck.

They also quoted TAT governor Yutthasak Suphasorn as recognising the role played by both groups of people in what he called the "restart" of tourism after the lowest income in years was experienced in 2020.

The media reported that tourism worldwide - 10% of the world economy - had been devastated since the world first learned of the coronavirus, that they said started on December 8th 2019.

A 52 trillion baht worldwide industry had been devastated, they said.

But in an upbeat assessment of the future they said that Thailand in particular and Asia in general would recover faster than elsewhere in the world.

They said that Thailand was still a "magnet" for tourism and that Thai investment in building new attractions would bring a new group of tourists.

They said that Thailand is recognized as one of the places in the world where the Covid-19 situation has been best handled.

  • So, do these "heroes" qualify for any of these new government initiatives or do we still have to get our Thai partner's to book hotels in their names while we pay and take a back seat? Is it now easie

Thailand is still a magnet for tourists.  Theses experts are delusional, and now they appreciate expats.  Prove it by making the immigration process less troublesome

Probably not!

Just making it a standard process in all offices would be a good start.

reality check.

I just read the channel 3 link.

Well,

Hailed?  Stretching it. A lot. Perhaps “grateful” would be more realistic.

Heroes? It did say that 80% of the 8.2 million long term expats have gone and the remaining (20%) of expats that remain have been “heroes” but with more of a “savior for some businesses” meaning IMHO.

Not sure where they pulled the figures from.

Leading the way in Thai tourism recovery?  Nah, a bit of artistic license by the translator having a bit of a laugh.

I see some posters have assumed they were talking about “farangs”. Well, no specific mention of hero whitey either.

Sorry to deflate all the heroes. I am sure your mothers are proud of you all though.
Calm down and keep it real.

And at the same time, tens of thousands can not afford the very expensive fees to get back to see their kids, wives,  pets, houses and yachts.

It would be great if a journalist asked DPM Anutin what he thought about this story...

They are grateful for farang money and would prefer you just send that and not actually travel to Thailand. If you must, they really don't want you spending too much time there because they don't really like you that much.

Seriously??? I thought the Covid extensions made it relatively easy for long-termers to stay? And Thailand has definitely seemed more attractive than lockdowns everywhere else...

Are you talking about the Thai government, or also the Thai "fiancées"?

8.2 million long term expats...

Where does that number come from?

yes

Certain media might have you think so to sell papers/garner viewers or whatever, but ask the government, army, elites, even the general populace for a more 'balanced' view of long term farangs in the country.

Been a hero for 20 odd years. :burp:

Sounds like a softening up of farangs for a good rinsing to cover the losses ????
