Foreigners online slam "ridiculous" booze ban - no drinking from 6pm Saturday to 6pm Sunday

Yes, booze bans are ridiculous, we all know that. But to waste your energy bitching about it is a waste of that energy. It's what you signed up for. There are booze bans during elections and around many Thai holidays. Frankly they should extend them to some of these holidays where so many people get themselves killed on the roads. That's where the booze bans should be.

But hey, I'm just a foreigner, so I have to adhere to the rules in the country I have chosen.

And guys, if the booze bans upset you then just get plowed at home, lol You winos out there can stock up now...

In the years that I was in Thailand there are actually less of them now, only tend to be Buddha days & elections now.

I remember many years ago the old King said he wanted everyone to have a good time on his birthday, so they didn't ban it on that day.

Come on folks. Common sense and Thailand have never gone together and probably never will. It being announced in advance just means everyone will buy what they need the day before, so the stupid

Where do you live ?  I'll bring the ice.

I made a very similar suggestion but got a very blunt "no". Pity, as I was willing to travel.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but on a normal day, when supermarkets have the 14:00 to 17:00 ban on buying booze, if one buys 10 litres or more the ban doesn't apply?

The 10lt thing was binned way back in 2015.

It's not about getting "plowed", but more about the freedom of choice to have a drink or two at the end of the day/over dinner in peace and quite. Some of us have earned it.

If anyone has any evidence that people have died whilst drink voting I would be interested in seeing it !

Ah OK. It was something that I was aware of, but never exploited myself.????

I'm guess this ban is designed to kickstart the tourist economy???? I would never have thought of such a tactic on my own. Our leaders are truly geniuses.

If u really want a beer u find ???? one @#$% thats does shifty ..bit like stay behind all them years ago when pubs close @ 3...@ 11..happy drinking

If this very short ban, or any other booze ban in a normal Thailand year, worries and upsets  you,  you certainly do have an alcohol problem and need to seek specialist  help for that obvious dependency. You also have a serious inability to forward plan your life.

Their country ... up to them.

The manager of my local in Bangkok said last night that it is not all areas - so we should be okay.

You think this about dieing whilst voting ?

I thought it was an attempt to ensure (hopefully)  people are voting with a clear head.

Yawn.

Election booze bans have been around for a while but hey, don't let that stop you climbing on the tourist economy bandwagon.

Think about those that work in the bar/entertainment business. It will not probably be a paid day off, no drink commissions, no tips. In an economy that has already suffered a lot of hardship why add to it. They are trying to promote domestic tourism yet no one will be travelling this weekend

And the USA said “we have Thailand on our watchlist because we think Thailand is manipulating the currency...the Thai baht”.... ALL from a country that manipulates everything including the currency and war’s WORLD WIDE!!!

Do Thai restaurants do corkage? If so, is that allowed on Saturday/Sunday during the ban?

As long as you don't go on TripAdvisor and write  multiple bad reviews

In my last stock check I counted: 5 litres whiskey, 6 Litres vodka, 3 litres gin, 3 litres rum, 1 litre malibu, 2 bottles baileys and 16 bottles of wine.

What ban are we talking about exactly? ????

If you go  easy, you should be able to  stretch this for the 24 hours.

I agree

and since saturday night is for a lot of entertanment venues THE night where they do most of their weekly money

common sense would have been to start the ban in the night of saturday to sunday, at 1 or 2 am.

It wasn't necessary to ''kill'' the saturday night business, particularly in these difficult times

Why not make booze ban permanent it will definitely help towards a reduction in road deaths. Will of course be final coffin for tourism industry what is left of it. Close borders permanently also which will save money for covid vaccination programme as no longer required if it is true Thailand Covid free

What we are dealing with is Thai logic and we all know how that goes. The idea is to stop people getting drunk on voting day or being too hung over to bother. You can, however, drink as much as you like at home on voting day thus voiding the ban. Insanity.

What defines a party? Families coming together to share food and have a few drinks? Madness.

I do not get what the big deal is. Anything other than breathing, eating, and sleeping, anything done every day, tends to get boring and monotonous. Take a day off! Or stock up in advance, if you do not possess any self discipline. This is such a tiny thing to be wigging out about. Is life really that boring, that one day without a visit to a bar is that hard?

Edited by spidermike007

Just stay home, open a good bottle of wine and watch some movies.

It just proves, that is government is totally off.

it's like the crack heads whining after a DEA multi ton coke bust, don't worry I've seen the junkies do fine even in the middle of a Saudi desert..

Clearly the mention of hopefully went over your head and you are arguing for the sake of it.

Goodbye troll.

Ironicallya lot here upset by the ban don't even live in Thailand and those that do most likely rarely visit a Bar anyways.

But just love to climb aboard the "Its about Mah Freedumbs" bandwagon !!
