PHUKET: 5G coverage across the island is already nearing 100% with only lesser populated areas remaining to be connected, as hopes run high that the new level of connectivity will help lure many different types of businesses not dependent on tourism to start up on the island.

Full 100% coverage is expected to be completed by the middle of next year, explained Pracha Asawateera, Southern Area Manager of Digital Economy Promotion Agency (DEPA, based in Phuket. As such, Mr Pracha is the DEPA Area Manager for all of Southern Thailand.

“Presently, the 5G network coverage is nearly 100% on Phuket island. We plan to complete 100% coverage in the middle of 2021,” he said.

Businesses and hotels would likely install a fast fibre connection, they don't need 5G mobile. 1Gbps fibre is universally available now in all built up areas - but I bet there are many hotels that still don't have it. I'm a follower of tech and need to be connected at all times for business and communication use but just cannot see the need for 5G (not yet nor in the near future). 4G is universal even upcountry and gives great speeds for VOIP, Video Calls and streaming. Do Thais really need 5G to load Facebook or TikTok everso slighly faster? The 5G phones are expensive too.

As for luring businesses not dependant on tourism then why choose Phuket? The idea of connectivity is that business can be done from anywhere. Home or upcountry or in remote areas would be a lot cheaper locations. Can't see many big companies relocationg or starting up in Phuket just because of 5G.

Amazing, is there anything that the 5G panacea is not useful for?

So few specific applications where this new mobile internet is necessary.

How long can I survive with a non 5G cell phone

Won't this cause more covid19 cases?

Anti-vaxxers better move out of the area.

I wonder that....why do I need anything faster than 4G?.......I have been told that it is the essential step forward in driverless cars!!!!!!

...and if any country were to benefit from driverless cars it has to be Thailand.

Yes, one of the real applications. Low latency ("ping" time) required.

Yes the businessmen will be tripping over each other on their way to Phuket to open businesses because of 5G on the island.... WHAT A CROCK OF *****
