The UK is not being "strict" because instead of building up the infrastructure and the customs/border control (i.e. hiring and training all the people that were required) -- when Brexit became a common market exit... they left it effectively til the last minute and will not complete it until 2024...  a failure to plan on the UK side does not make it an emergency on the EU side.   The EU is not being belligerent towards the UK when it comes to trade.... they are treating you as a foreign market...  outside of the common market.. and as such like any export/import situation there are additional administration costs, forms for documenting exports and documents for importation as well as additional processes for importing fresh produce (not specific to coming from the UK).   The EU government represents the interests of their own citizens and businesses -- not the UK... I see no reason why the EU would feel any obligation to give any special treatment to the UK over any other country like the US or Canada when it comes to trade.  If you wanted to have friction-less trade (as in a domestic market), then the UK should have stayed in the common market (like Switzerland -- not part of the EU but part of the Common Market [and in their case Shengen]).  In fact the EU did offer a longer period of transition earlier on - but the UK rejected it. 

 

So how do I know the Brexit is not going well?  Many Brexiters are telling me it by whinging about how bad they are being treated by the EU, or how the sudden rotting of fish on the docks is not because of Brexit but because of COVID (the fish exports were already down because of COVID, the rotting fish is because sales dropped rather rapidly on January 1... which corresponds to Brexit...   The fact they have fish rotting on docks means that the expected current sales are less than they expected (as it would have been with COVID affecting sales).   If Brexit was going well, the politics would not need to have to find scapegoats (and people would not be parroting the same whinging about those scapegoats)... they would be showing us all of what has gained (like the battery)... but right now those stories are few and far between... hence the need for scapegoats. 

 

Before January 1st the EU was effectively a domestic market, now it is a foreign market and trade is international with all the processes that come with it... It is what it is, now go out and make a success of it rather than spending your days whinging about how you are not being treated like a domestic market of the EU.

When looking at the reasons stated in that report, it is very clear that in a couple of newsworthy instances, the EU is being belligerent.

 

Do you not know that Brexit is 'not going well'. No, the Remainer press is picking minor examples, inflating them and reporting with their own spin. 

 

If Brexit was going well, (As generally is the case) there would be very little praise from the press. (As generally is the case) With regard to scapegoats, there is no great blame to apportion but it's always worthwhile to highlight the bitterness and pettiness of both our 'friends' across the channel and the Remain moaners. You can always see it, even in their posts here.

Remainers - I expect to point out things that support their viewpoint, but when Brexiters parrot that it is the fault of the EU ... then it is a better indication of the situation...  and that is not good. 

 

I think what you view as EU belligerence is simply a fact of now being a fully foreign market - what the rest of the world is use to (i.e. not being able to carry sandwiches or open fresh food across the border - these examples are what happens normally crossing the US border from Canada).  I put it down to the fact that the memory of what it means to being a foreign market crossing borders is new to you ... so you see it as belligerence.  When a new Trade agreement is signed, there is a long period of adjustment and there are periodic minor adjustments... but those don't happen immediately... it is at most an annual thing and usually a longer process... since both sides have to sit down and when the UK asks for a change, the EU will ask for something in exchange... and if you can come up with an agreement on these minor changes they are implemented after that point.

The Dutch guards who confiscated the bloke's ham sarnies were definitely EU. As far as reported, the others doing the nitpicking were EU too. Call it as you see it - belligerence.

 

What ever happened to that certain laissez faire attitude? As we have known all along, we were only friends while supporting their bloated EUtopia, some of them now have a point to prove. Fortunately these incidents are not common, and do not represent the whole of Brexit trade.

The European parliament is pushing for UK overseas territories including the British Virgin Islands, Guernsey and Jersey to be added to an EU tax havens blacklist after the conclusion of the Brexit deal.

Sending a signal that tougher action on tax avoidance was required in response to the coronavirus pandemic, MEPs voted overwhelmingly in favour of adding more nations and territories to the list of non-cooperative jurisdictions.
