What Would (seriously) Make You Leave Thailand ?

Featured Replies

I've seen so many "If this happens I'm outta here!" posts out there in the

normal world but I just saw one that took the whole packet of biscuits.

I agree. Everyone has to know their own boundaries for 'enough is enough', and when Google gets censored, I'm outta here. It'll just be a sign of things to come.

For me not even terminal visa problems would do it. I'll just lie low like I always do

and not bother anyone. But should a Chang yai go to 100b in Tescos I'm over the

Mekong in a dugout.

And you guys/gals/3rdSexes (I'm getting PC in my old age!)?

As I don't yet live in Thailand I just have to be creative...

If Thailand became the 'Nanny state' that Britain has become I'd be out of there!

I think the obvious one would be social collapse such as a full scale civil war or the change from the present benevolent dictatorship to something like the Military Junta in Myammar.

I also am not resident yet and am struggling to think of something that would destroy completely my desire to return and make it my home. Short of a protracted bloody civil war, vicious martial law, Thailand an Islamic state under sharia law, virulent plague or, similar to farangsay, Singha going through the 100 Baht a bottle level no single thing would put me off.

As for the censorship of Google being a reason to bail out, well that quite rightly takes the biscuit. Sheeesh, some people are in desperate need of a life!

All of the above, but you would probably still have to take me out in a wooden box.

As for the Google remark, I agree completely Phil. I lived here for 18 months with practically no internet access, it didn't ruin my life ..... now I have it 24/7 (ipstar allowing) it may do :o

It would some extreme changes before I would consider relocating.

Obviously, if they were to change the visa rules to something that makes it almost impossible to acquire, that could effect future plans.

If the country were to suddenly become another Saudi Arabia/Iran type state (in both government and religion), that would see me out of here in a hurry, though that isn't likely to happen until long after I've passed on and been re-incarnated as the most annoying mozzie ever evolved (or created in Suegha's case !). :D

A full-out civil war might see a temporary relocation, depending on the outcome (and my involvement in it, got to protect those certain "establishments" you know !) :D

If the baht appreciated to a level that made living here unaffordable (or, in other words, comparable to back in the mother country), I may seek other locations in which to spend my $ (I hear Outer Mongolia is pretty cheap, and has some nice weather, once in awhile). :D

But again, it would take some extreme changes to make me consider any alternatives. Hopefully things will go the other way, and it will become even more attractive to stay here (though that would mean an increase in other ex-pats as well). :o

If I didn't have my little boy & the dog center, I'd leave. There's nothing here for me now, but my obligations & responsibilities and my love for them (son & dogs). I wouldn't go back to UK though, probably HK.

I'm with NR, here too. If I didn't have my husband and my dogs I'd go back to the US. Of course, if I didn't have my husband I'd find a way to bring my dogs back with me, only having 5 :o

Regarding the quote by the OP - there's a much larger issue at play here for us IT folk.

Only within the last two years has Thailand seen affordable and (sort of) reliable broadband. Coming from somebody who uses Google search at least 20 times on a slow day, this will be a monumental step backwards from a country which is already dragging its heals.

I could understand the YouTube ban. Banning Google (which is now in the realms of possibility) would be like the entire country falling for the ultimate troll-bait.

(I have used other search engines, but the familiarity, speed and overall effectiveness of Google always ensures me returning.)

Being ridiculous doesn't make it implausible here. Luckily most times you can laugh it off...

SBK not trying to be facecious but curious on your reply to this - assuming your husband and dogs are happily living with you in Koh Phangan and there was a successionist/civil war would you leave to go back to the US?

November - same question to you assuming you have your son and the dogs?

That is until your life in Thailand goes to rat shit, in which case you'll almost certainly sneek back to Nanny - Like so many do.

Well we'd better hope our life goes to rat shit soon otherwise the government of the Islamic state of Greater Britainstan will have banished all infidels and sharia law will rule. :o

Well if this includes the normal English rant (OK I've heard it in France too) about

the government favouring immigrants over their own people that would be a turnup !

For the government housing , handouts , food stamps , free health care - where do

I sign ?

I'm a ref U G . Honest !

Yippee !

If a civil war were. to break out (which I just can't imagine happening), and if one or both of the combatants was aggressively targetting foreigners for "disappearing", then I'd probably take an extended trip to Italy, with hopes of returning when the troubles subside.

CB,

I physically cannot take my son out of Thailand, so even if there were an insurgency or civil war I would stay for him, if I could (ie if I wasn't deported). If, in those circumstances, I could take him, but (obviously) had to leave the dogs, I would put his safety above theirs & take him out of Thailand.

Agree with the above, and if Thai girls somehow lost their appreciation for, fat, homely, old wastrels, I might have to move to Hawaii and become a homeless beach bum. :o

I can't think of a thing that would take me out aside from death.

And even then, after I slip down the chute at the Wat, the wife takes the ashes and buries them in LOS - Tescos parking lot where I know she'll visit me! :o

You should remember what the nuns used to tell us , Suegha.

Guesthouse's posts are a mystery we're not meant to understand.

Thank you faransay, you made me laugh out loud - well chuckle at least. :D I had a flashback to nuns telling us things were a 'mystery'. Yeah, right!

Actually Boon Mee's post made me think of the "in a box" possibility.

Coming back from our neighbourhood 7/11 tonight I made the mistake of

looking the wrong way before stepping out between the parked cars and

was almost totalled by a moto-taxi speeding up the wrong side of the road

with no lights. Udomsuk is really "the quick and the dead" country.

Whilst my reaction was a tad loud and abusive , and he is probably even

now trying to find 15 colleagues and enough rudimentary weapons to go

round with a view to teaching me proper Thai etiquette , he and his pals

will probably be looking for a German gentleman as only their language

has words remotely as long as "Whatthafukkd'yathinkyou'redoingyafukkingeedjit".

:o

I think Guest House has a very valid point. What if your life does go to shit in Thailand?

If your lucky, the shit will have to do with law/legalities. In which case, with money all wheels can be made to go round. But what if it's something else? Say, for example that an expat deals with the wrong people one night, or goes to a new restaurant that maybe he should have stayed away from, or get into an accident with somebody from a powerful family, or something, that can be totally unwitting, random, but can and does happen several times a year to unwitting expats?

Suddenly have a 10 year sentence handed down to you from a criminal court of three judges and no jury, for some unwitting accident?

Or have a lynch mob from the other parties family?

Anything can and does happen, even to the cautious, quiet expats, and some people have to leave the country due to that.

Personally my next home for when I do finally return to SE-A, will be in Cambodia. I see more growth potential there, on a societal level, and it has a far longer journey to go before it reaches anything approaching a "Nanny State".

November thanks for the reply - it is what I expected. I sincerely hope the situation never arises and that your current cirumstances are happily resolved.

If nothing else you have my thoughts and best wishes for you, your son, and your dogs

No way - there are at least 3,753 threads dealing with this plus Chownah's advice column.

But back to leisurely's post I am wondering if she is refering to the death of a prominent and much revered person?

That & the subsequent happenings would have been my guess too.

Absolutely not. Very little of mainland politics reaches my island, I've been through two coups and there has been no effect there. I wouldn't leave without my husband. Period.

And if my husband were to go with, I'd still try to take my dogs, unlike NR, I only have 5 :D

Thanks SBK and November Rain, part of the reason I asked is that you are both located geographically in the Southern Regions and if Civil War did erupt under secular lines it would be much closer to both of you than me in the North.

I knew someone who was in Cambodia prior to the fall of Phnom Phen and he had a Cambodian Wife - he got her out BEFORE the fall, if he had waited she would not have been allowed to leave. It was a horrific time for both of them. THe whole country was waiting for the US marines to arrive and save them which of course didn't happen.

I do not thing anything like that will occur here but it is always something I keep in the back of my mind.
