Thai farmers to be told to stop burning farm waste or face legal action

All provincial governors in Thailand have been told to stop the burning of agricultural waste in their provinces. The burning is being blamed for the current air pollution in Bangkok and its suburbs, and in several northern and central provinces.

The accumulation of PM2.5 dust in the atmosphere, mainly caused by outdoor burning of waste, especially on farms, combined with poor air circulation, has been posing a health risk for the past several days, said Lt-Gen Kongcheep Tantravanich, a spokesman for Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan.

He said the poor air quality has prompted General Prawit to order all provincial governors to send teams to warn farmers to stop the burning or face prosecution.

  • All the farmers are just laughing their socks off, hearing the same thing every year. As usual it will be all talk, no action.

  • Is there an echo in here ?

  • I anticipate a significant increase in the number of "accidental" fires starting around 2.30AM.

Words gone with the “Smoked” wind.

Pathetic.....you will never stop them.......unless they are paid for the waste.

They built a new cement road near us on Sukumvit Rd. It only opened a few months back but the cement is already black from smoky car exhausts.

INSANITY...

every year I die of pollution.  every year they do the same stuff.  every year I expect something different.

i am the dumbest person in the world for reading the headline....

Any bets that it will end up with the same enforcement percentage as wearing a crash helmet on motorcycles.

Yet, these words are repeated every year, and fall on deaf ears.  The burning will continue until the beatings start.

Yep as all have said, same message every year and nothing done.

I used to get angry when I would open up my curtains here in the country to allow the sunlight in at around 6.00am to get the kids ready for school, and all I would see is thick smoke filled in between all the trees, my wife would try to humour me and say it's mist.

Took me a while to be able to actually accept and realise nothing was going to change as I was getting worked up over it and only upsetting myself, so how could I change things to benefit my mind set.

1) I stopped opening up the curtains until I returned from dropping the kids off at school later in the morning when it was almost gone.

2) Allowed the kids to sleep in for half an hour a day and wake them at 6.30am, taking our time to get them ready

3) Delayed taking the kids to school by half an hour to 45 minutes, however wouldn't allow them to exit the car to go and sit at assembly if the smoke was bad, after all, what is the point of them sitting in assembly to listen to someone waffle on about nothing while they fill their lungs with smoke.

The principal pulled the wife aside one day and mentioned her concerns about the kids coming to school late, my wife's reply was well, my husband and I see don't want our kids sitting on the floor and breathing in the heavy smoke, furthermore especially in winter when the ground is cold, it serves no purposes, it's almost the same as making the kids walk around the school grounds with no shoes on, socks only, it just makes them sick, and the principal looked at her with a confused look, with my wife adding, if you can't accept what my reasoning is, perhaps you would like me to take the kids out of this school and walked off.

Haven't heard a thing, no doubt the principal accepted her reasoning because it's a school that you have to pay every quarter, cha ching, and just smiles at her when she sees her, although I reckon she must be cursing her every time she sees her.

But it will still be ok for school teachers to burn plastic waist right next to there class rooms

Do what? Protect them? Seems fairly reasonable to me.

Terrible where I'm living, out in the sticks of rural Korat, what with farmers burning their fields and every local making charcoal, plus the usual burning of trash & plastic. That charcoal burning smells worse....vile stuff, if I walk past one of those fires and the smoke gets in my mouth it's terrible taste, takes hours to get rid of it, yet I see Thais standing around those fires happy as old Larry, breathing in that vile stinking smoke.

Mosses could hold back the water in the sea, easier than getting the farmers to stop the burning. Even if they did, what about Malaysia, Philippines, Cambodia, Loas, etc.

I'll  just  nip down the road and  pass on this information  to EVERYONE  around here, they're  all doing it.

Sad to hear what, that we protect our children from the smoke lingering in the air while teachers waffle on about nothing at assembly ?

You might accept filling up your kids lungs with smoke, we prefer them not too, our children prefer it this way as well, sitting on the ground breathing in smoke and getting cold in winter in the shade might be the way you want to raise your kids, but not us.

The kids go to class on time, albeit it they miss out on some waffle during the burning season, big deal, still getting 3.7's, 3.8's and a 4 if you believe that, I don't as I know my kids.

Carry on being judgemental and raising your kids the way you want to, but don't be sticking your beak into what I do with my kids, to the famous words of many family court judges, "when the child is in the parents care, the parents will have the child's best interest at heart".

And many at 5.30pm after the Police and Govt Officials go home.

Finished burning then before 9am next day.

Well; we're always being told 'Thailand is different' !

Let me get this straight: other people are burning their sxxt and polluting the air and you're giving this guy grief?! Jeez!

At best they will arrest one or two of these dirt farmers to show everyone what a good job they are doing and then it’s business as usual as it has been for the last several decades.

One farce after another.

This is another prime example of having a nation of uneducated, ill-informed, irresponsible and inconsiderate people. Nobody cares, nobody knows and nobody wants to know, nobody educates, nobody wants to change and improve themselves, their home, their neighborhood or their country.

It's not going to improve/change anytime soon.

Ironic I guess he ment you should take your kids and rise them somewhere else where there is less pollution.

Today has been about the worst day I can remember as far as smoke haze goes ( rural Korat ) so everyone must have got the word yesterday.

We have only five rai of rice and I have this year brought in a bigger tractor to plow the stubble back into the dirt. An extra 200 baht.

Just get those damned old Isuzu diesel pickups off the road...that's half your problem.
