The Buddha next to her in the OP image is far more attractive than she is.

Many quality Buddha statues are most beautiful art.

Well, I mean from the neck  up...

Um, that girl could hold my attention a lot, lot longer than any or all buddha statues...

Well from my POV it was art but it did offend a lot of Christians at the time.

Art should provoke comment and thought, and I am sure Mapplethorpe laughed a ll the way to his next exhibition, too sad for the "offended".

All religions are hypocritical and used as such. That's why I do not believe or follow any religion.

O yea of little faith ???? :wai:

Well lets be honest here. I have found in my life time up to now that the HUGE majority of people use religion when it suits them. Its not something anyone adheres too. Its just how it is. Thailand is no different. I know quite a few that went and did the Monk process and once completed, they are back to doing the same stuff that they did before.

Religion is a personal thing and to each their own. I do not follow any. I was baptized catholic but put it aside years ago.

My comment was in no way a criticism, just wry humour ????

Are you really so ignorant of Thailand's history and culture that you sexualize an innocent image and interpret it from the sexually screwed up mindset of a farang? Have you not made an effort to understand the local historical culture?  Long before Europeans with their repressed and deviant sexual mores arrived in Asia, Africa and the South Pacific, the locals went around topless. Female breasts were not sexual objects as they were in Christian countries.   In plain language, that is an image common of ancient Siam and features a woman of some wealth.

boobs-2

Above is mural paintings inside Wat Kaew, Chiang Rai. This is how women dressed in old Siam.

It is not pornography. Topless women were common up until the 1930's.

What the Mexican woman did was wrong because she sexualized a religious icon. It is no different than defiling  religious imagery and symbols of the Christian faith. The Mexican government would have been up in arms if she had posed lustfully with  a larger than life size religious icon of the Church of Rome.

You're certainly right about the earlier cultural norms but I would suggest that the image posted by Phuketshrew is in fact a religious image depicting an Apsara.

We have one in our back yard that’s as tall as my thigh and our dog urinates on it a few times a day. After reading this story I’m going to go out and take a wizz on it myself.

Jeez, here we go again.

More moralistic outrage from the conservative minority.

No doubt someone wearing a yellow tie will pop up and talk about offense to the nation.

You ought to go to the Facebook site and read the comments from the Thai people. There is very little outrage, in fact virtually none. The most is that a contestant in a beauty contest should have done a bit more homework about the culture first as it is not just about beauty but brains too.

Agree totally with the above comments.  Buddhism in Thailand is used selectively as a stick to beat people with; but studiously ignored when the scent of baht is in the air.

These Phallic symbols of fertility, go hand in hand with honouring the sacred images and statues of Buddha.

Any one who does not know and honour the Buddhist tradition should avoid commenting on them.

Maybe she can gamble away some money by buying lottery tickets at the local temple to show her respect for the religion...

The only religion in Thailand is money.

Religion.

Biggest problem the human race faces.

The overwhelming majority of conflicts around the globe since we first stood on 2 legs is directly attributable to religious nonsense.

The pictures appeared on "Berng Nang Ngam" (gaze at beauty queens) a popular site on Facebook that is promoting the upcoming Miss Grand International 2020 to be held at Show DC Hall in downtown Bangkok on March 27th

Was everybody so focused at the pixeled pictures that they forgot to see that it's Miss Grand International 2020 to be held in 2021 ??? Isn't it Miss Grand International 2021 then ??? Wow how a pair of pixeled ???????? can have the whole forum off balance ????????
