Six Thai media organizations urge everyone in political conflict to show restraint

Thailand’s six media organizations issued a joint statement Sunda), urging all parties in the current political conflicts to exercise restraint, following a violent protest Saturday night, at and around Sanam Luang, during which the police, protesters and some media representatives were injured.

 

The six media organizations are the National Press Council, the Thai Journalists Association, the Thai Broadcast Journalists Association, the Online News Providers Association, the News Broadcast Council of Thailand and the National Union of Journalists Thailand.

 

The media organizations said that they disagree with violence in all forms, citing the protest by the anti-establishment ReDem group on Saturday night, which led to clashes between the police and the protesters and eventual use of water cannons, teargas and rubber bullets, causing injuries to several reporters and photographers.

Thai PM to head a security meeting on Monday to assess political situation

Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is reportedly scheduled to chair a meeting of Thailand’s National Security Council on Monday, to assess the political situation following recent and increasingly violent political protests.

 

On Saturday night, police used water cannons, tear gas and rubber bullets against anti-establishment protesters, after they tried to break through a barricade of cargo containers at Sanam Luang in Bangkok, in order to approach the Grand Palace.

 

A number of police officers, protesters and members of the media were injured and 20 protesters were arrested and held in custody at the Region 1 Border Patrol Police Command in Pathum Thani on multiple charges, including lèse majesté.
