Imagine if Thailand became like the West, where everyone must have a perfect garden with a grass lawn in front of the house, or even worse, all around the house. ;-) There is enough water during the rainy season, but eventually Thailand could also face an environmental crisis, especially in heavily populated areas. The more Thailand develops, the more modern agriculture develops at the same time. More and more farmers can afford solar powered water pumps that can run 24/7, filling ponds where much of the water evaporates, or simply pumping and watering more than necessary, wasting valuable and vulnerable groundwater, some of which can take hundreds or even thousands of years to replenish. Sorry for being the party pooper, and it indeed looks nice to have some green around the house here in Thailand, especially in some moobans. The trick is to have some useful plants that keep the soil moist more efficiently, and locally adapted grass and ground cover that are easier to maintain, even if they might not look perfect in Western eyes. ;-)
