Lastly the word was only two or three lines down in your dictionary. It's "losing".

If we are going to alert folks to their grammical spelling mistakes we might as well tell them what religion to suscribe to as well, eh?

Rubbish, that's a terrible analogy that is just saying if you don't believe it then you are just missing out on the bigger picture.

How can you compare religion to a smokey bear cartoon?, to say that is dumbing down the argument would be an understatement.

And anyway Smokey the Bear never started any wars! Leave him out of it!

Robski obviously has a problem with 'organised' religion. True Christianty has never, and could never, start a war. It is totally forbidden by Scripture - The words of Jesus, Love thine enemy, turn the other cheek, etc...

Absolutely spot on suegha, if it was possible to have just one wish I wouldn't wish for riches, I would wish that there was no religion in this world.

Maybe then people would focus more on our simililarities rather than our differences, and see that it in times of trouble it is not divine inspiration that comes to aid you, but another fellow human being. Also we would spend our lives fufilling our dreams rather than sacrificing them for something better in the next life. I know this doesn't apply to you as you seem to balance your life and your belief very well, but for many people freedom from religion and the intolerance that it can create would equate to emancipation. I think I'll leave it at that as I appreciate your personal feelings and I think you may all prefer to carry on this topic without interuption from an obvious non believer. Peace.

:o:D :D Funny it is..

jet on weekends...

Sorry to "dis" anyone, but I am pretty sure that the Bible is a bunch of incomprehensible gobble-de-gook and anyone who says that they can understand it is either nuts, delusional or a pathalogical liar.

I haven't bothered to try to read any other "Holy Books", but from briefly skimming them, I'm pretty sure that they are pretty much the same. :o

Okay, okay, I'll accept 'nuts' and even 'delusional' but not pathalogical liar!

Note to Farangsay, and anyone else interested. The 6000 years you mention is an estimate on the times stated in scripture. However, it's not a diary, the estimate is based on the years stated and the ages of people. It is in no way scientific.

Regarding the people who knew Jesus in the NT, Matthew, Mark, and John were all apostles, James was Jesus brother - these are all certain! Some of the other Gospels you mentioned are just a joke - they just do not ring true nor can they be reconciled with the rest of Scripture. I have had the 'pleasure' of reading some and believe me, it doesn't take an academic to expose them.

I once did a study of 'Gnosticism', Greek philosophy which permeated the early church and was written about extensively in John's letters. There was a certain 'secret knowledge that only a few had - knowledge is power. It was not available to the masses. I reckon that many organised religions do that today!

Who made this then... ???

Interesting article on "Why religion must end".... http://www.alternet.org/story/36195/

The rainbow, God made it and gave it as a sign to Noah makiing a promise that he would never curse the earth again in this way.

Regarding the article. I'm glad he was a leading atheist, don't want any of the lesser atheists. I must google 'ranking system for atheists'. :o I read the article with an open mind and can seriously say I just don't get it! Why are some non-believers so 'evangelical' in the preaching of their non-belief. There was a time when you could be a happy solo atheist, now you have to convince others to abandon their belief system and be just like you.

Not wanting to start a polemic , but in view of those religions who have proselytised throughout

history and continue to do so today the phrase "man bites dog" does spring to mind.

Now he sends "American Idol" and Paris Hilton :o

People who look at religion and see division and wars are missing the point again. Wars are rarely started on religious grounds. They may use it as an excuse, but the reasons behind it is often different. What people who espouse this concept miss by concentrating on these big issues are the millions of little things occurring everyday that have their basis in religious teachings. Honesty, not stealing, not killing, helping those in need. These impulses do not occur naturally in nature, but they are the underpinnings of most religions. People giving to others in need, parents teaching their children not to take things that aren't theirs, and a man walking away in frustration, while a girl who just said "no" walks away safely goes directly against our animal instincts, but follows morals founded on religious teachings.

So far as intolerance goes, it was a civil rights movement led by southern baptists, along with many Jewish, and Muslim writers and activists that destroyed segregation in the US. It was Ghandi's spiritual beliefs and strength of character that kept the independence and partitioning of India from turning into a bloodbath.

I have no hard statistics but I'd bet that for every person who died in a religious war, five others were not killed, beaten, or raped in everyday society, because of the moral guidelines laid down by various religions.

We already, in my opinion, live in a society too worried about fulfilling our own dreams and not worrying about the future. More reasons to be selfish, we don't need.

I'm not trying to be nasty. Just sharing my most honest feelings on the subject.

However, I did say "either", "or", not all three! :D

My etiquette teacher told me never to discuss politics, religion or sex at the dinner table and to always leave the napkin crumpled.

Well that just makes for a lot of awkward silences when having dinner at the playboy mansion with the vicar and the mayor. :o

And that's why it's all action and no talk at dinners with the Italian ex porn star turned member of parliament and the bishop of Milano.

I saw her strip at a club in Winnipeg years ago. I could see why she went into politics. :o

And not many of us suscribing to this fine forum get invited to the Playboy Mansion these days or frequent Winnipeg strip clubs (bloody cold there, I suspect).

People who look at religion and see division and wars are missing the point again.

That's twice you've claimed I've missed the point, I haven't missed anything. It is a matter of opinion.

I don't really agree with yours, but it is your opinion. :o

Agreeing to differ is the foundation of respect.

ps Robski, I don't think cdnvic was posting with you in mind.

Holy smokaroonies! I pass over the thread for a day or more and look what I missed! Invites to Winnipeg strip clubs, the Playboy mansion and research projects on fallen angels.

Back to the Bible and other good books: I read a passage Tiggy was using for a lecture, and it pleased me muchly. There's something comforting about reading scriptures.

I also remember being pleased that I could understand a Zen meditation tract in Japanese; it was only about how to sit, breathe, etc, but it gave me a rush.

One of my favourite mottoes is "The best is not always simple, but simple is always best."

An all knowing, all powerful, all caring, very organized God with a plan seems to me too good to be true, and if something seems to be too good to be true.......

Correct. I think a great many people in general miss that point, I wasn't singling anyone out specifically.

Yo Bops, haven't seen you in a while, how are you?

To answer your comment, I have found many things to be to good to be true, and yet, they are true!

In the scriptural perspective, "God is Love", and love is too good to be true, and yet it is true! That's my Christian take on it...

I'm fine, been a bit busy and trying to focus on my upcoming school change, going to a real university instead of a community college, once again. :o

Well, you know my take, I just can't believe in God, doesn't fit in with how the universe works, unless God is something else than what you or other Christians think he is. Which I admit could be, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Cheers, mate!! :D

In my experience, not that many Christians view God as I do!!! But hey, each to their own. I'm glad you are well. Love to you and your family.

You're right, I should have known better than to group you with others, you do stand out. :o
