One Of My Users Is Locking Up The Machine.

Featured Replies

My Master User (Admin) is completely locking up the system just after the DeskTop migrates. The machine boots into my other 3 user profiles OK, if I boot into one of them then try to switch to the Master User the machine locks up again. I need to ‘Reset’ to reboot.

Another problem:- My ‘System Restore’ keeps reporting the it can’t complete the restore, does not matter to which ‘Restore Point’ I use.

I’ve run all my registry repair utilities with out success. I’m currently building a new user but what a pain it is getting all my settings back the way I like. Some copy and paste in ‘Document and Settings’ helps but it’s not all that simple.

Is there a way of copying a complete user profile to another user in Xp SP2 both Professional and Home

Any ideas?

Right click "My computer"> Properties > Advanced - User Profiles > Settings and there you can copy a profile to another profile.

You can try to start in Safe Mode and log on as Administrator (this name).

To run System Restore you need to have full administrator rights and as long as you can't log on as administrator you'll not able to run system restore.

Mainly the problem not able to logon is because the password was changed or the SAM database is damaged.

If the password is the problem PM or send me an e-mail and I'll explain the way how to solve this problem. But I wouldn't answer any question in the forum how to do so!

Yep, if your admin account is locked, and the other user profiles are not a member of the administrators group, system restore won't work. If the lockout is a password problem, just google for reset NT password, it's suprisingly easy to access the SAM database from a linux boot cd for instance.

or (under xp pro, does not work with xp home) right click my computer > Manage > Inside the management console > Local users and groups > Users > right click administrator> set new password, and if it is locked (meaning with a Red cross on the icon) righ click then properties, and uncheck "Account is disabled"

Thank you for the replys guys. It's not a password problem the profile loads the Desk Top and about 50% of my Start Up applications before locking up. I have run all my applications in a different user profile with no problems. Any way I have finished rebuilding and deleted the faulty user.

All but one of my users have admin rights and I'm still not able to load System Restored Points even when logged in as the original Administrator. I appear to be able to create new points OK.

I'll play with the profile copying application but sure it will only copy over things like Desk Top, Favourites, Display options etc. Not things like MS Office options like the way I have my Excel, Word, Outlook etc set up.
