The 35 new COVID deaths announced Tuesday by the government set a daily record high for Thailand, even as the number of general population new cases (1,793) marked its lowest level in the past nine days.

The prior daily high for COVID deaths in Thailand was 34 reached on May 12. The last time Thailand had a lower general population COVID cases tally was 1,630 reached on May 10.

The 680 new prison cases Tuesday brought the total number of prison COVID cases reported by the government in the past week to 11,428.

In a piece of good news, total COVID hospitalizations, critical condition cases and patients requiring ventilators (shown in the light blue box below) all declined in Tuesday's report, accelerating a trend of recent days. The total COVID hospitalized population declined by 280 patients to 42,988. The number of those patients in critical condition dropped by 76 to 1,150, and the share of those on ventilators dropped by 16 to 384.

Thailand breaks its highest-ever single-day COVID-19 death toll on Tuesday with 35 new fatalities. A total of 2,473 new confirmed cases were found in the past 24 hours, bringing the total tally to 113,555. Today's figure includes 680 cases found in prisons.

The rolling seven-day averages of new daily COVID cases and deaths in Thailand both reached record highs in the latest update through May 16.

The daily average of COVID cases exceeded 2,581, largely spurred by the recent spate of COVID infections among more than 11,000 prison inmates, while the average of daily deaths exceeded 27, not including the record high 35 new COVID deaths reported today.

The rolling seven-day averages of COVID cases and deaths are used by many public health authorities to assess how COVID outbreaks are faring, since the averages tend to even out daily fluctuations.

In the hub of flip-flop, anyone believe this "news"?

Well something smells here. There are many clusters around BKK and only 680 positive prisoners. Yesterday in the top 10 new infections globally today no where near it. Interesting. Maybe I'm just being a bit of a cynic. Can't think why.

More mixed messaging/signals re foreigner vaccines from the government, May, June, August???

Lack of testing and reporting. Because if you add the numbers yourself from prisoners they should be higher 10.000 in prisons and there were not so many counted yesterday. So it might be wrong. Thing is this government messes up the numbers regularly. Also only a second test is needed to confirm. PUI people its called. By stalling you get lower numbers.

I hope im wrong because would be nice to see progress.

Daily vaccines given update:

The chart below first shows daily doses given in the past day (76,687), with subtotals for first and second shot doses. Then the cumulative total of 2.34 million doses given since Feb. 28, with subtotals for first and second shot doses and the types of vaccines administered.

Thailand has now given first dose COVID vaccines to more than 2 percent of its 70 million population, and fully vaccinated second doses to more than 1 percent of its population.

When the number of tests rise so does the number of cases.Unfortunately the test graph stops on the 24th April and the cases graph stops 15th May.

From the ourworldinata graphs there is a 3-4 day delay from when testing starts to increase to when cases start to increase, so is this the lag time between testing and the reporting of data?So far we can see it may take several weeks to release collected data and the uncollected data will remain exactly that uncollected data.

The government was talking about 300k people a day. So strange that the media never holds them responsible for what they say. 75, vs 300k .. that is like only 25% of what they said they would do. The Thai goverment keeps spewing numbers and stories but nobody ever seems to pin them down on their  numbers.

Its more PR then anything else.

The BMA in Bangkok says they are tracking 28 COVID outbreak clusters in 19 districts within the nation's capital, largely centered in the central and southern Bangkok areas.

The clusters include eight local communities, eight markets, one prison complex, seven workplaces, and four worker housing complexes.

The areas include Din Daeng, Ratchathewi, Bang Kapi, Dusit, Khlong Toei, Lak Si, Phra Nakhon, Prawet, Bangrak, Sathorn, Watthana, Suan Luang and Chatuchak. And new clusters in a Bangkok Noi area market and a Huai Khwang community.

I think it's a difference in part between the vaccination levels they're doing now vs. what they say they're going to be doing starting next month when  the local AstraZeneca doses are supposed to begin coming online. Right now, they continue to be limited mainly to the imported Sinovac doses from China.

Is it because of a “weekend” effect? Perhaps labs were closed on Sunday, so fewer cases reported today? Pure speculation though, I don’t actually know the process.

I think the vaccine for foreigners is a “suck it and and see” thing. Words such as “likely”, “ register”,  “by xyz date”, really mean that there is no clearly defined time scale. And in any case, it will vary province by province, pink card or no pink card etc etc.

I have an appointment booked for my first jab of AZ from the government on 14th June, in an Isaan province. No chance of getting an appointment in Phuket for sinovac or AZ. So it’s all over the map really. But like a lot of things in Thailand, I think they will get there in terms of vaccinating foreigners, but it will be uneven and with more than a few road bumps along the way and timing will be variable.

my biggest concern is whether they are being over optimistic about the ability of SB to deliver AZ, particularly in the early months, and also whether the same finite amount of supply has been promised to more than one province. But that won’t be apparent till the time comes, so wait and see I guess.

Lets keep watching this if the numbers of vaccinations per day don't rise we know they are full of B.S. I would say that there is enough Shinovac right now

I "ass" "u" "me" PR stands for "Poor Reporting"?Ha Ha!As this administration has no relation to the public.

No specific mention of foreigners whatsoever, as in included or excluded, in the latest vaccines rollout plan by the Bangkok local government:

https://prbangkok-eng.com/index.php/2021/05/17/unveil-the-bma-plan-for-target-groups-during-the-first-phase-of-vaccine-rollout/

"Regarding the BMA vaccine distribution plan among the target groups during the first phase, it is continued as planned. Still, the target groups are the medical and healthcare personnel, people with medical conditions in 7 chronic disease groups, the elderly aged 60 years and older, officers whose work is related to prevention and control of the spread of COVID-19, and people from occupational risk groups who have a chance to have close contact with patients."

AND

"As for the news regarding walk-in vaccination services for the general public which was not included in both initial and ad hoc plans at the first place; at this moment, the BMA does not provide any walk-in vaccination services. The people are requested to wait for the allocation of vaccine according to the schedule announced by the Government, which is from May 31, 2021 onwards. For the people who wish to have vaccine but are inconvenient or cannot register via “MorProm” LINE official account, they can register for vaccination at all 11 hospitals under the BMA Medical Service Department or request for more information at the BMA Medical Service Department’s 1646 hotline. The BMA is ready to facilitate everyone."

‘Teachers Ready’: Thailand attempts to kick-start education after COVID shutdown

Hit by a third wave of COVID-19 infections, Thailand’s education authorities have been forced to postpone the reopening of schools from May 17 to June 1. However, in a move to minimize the impact on children’s schooling, the Education Ministry on Monday (May 17) launched the online platform www.ครูพร้อม.com (Kru Prom or Teachers Ready).

Both students and teachers are being urged to log on so they can prepare for the upcoming semester.

The transformation in the UK has been hard won, but dramatic. Confirmation that no matter how much governments mess up, it’s still possible to retrieve the situation if sensible policies are followed in determined fashion.

the casualties along the way are something that Boris Johnson and his advisors will have to live with.

I’m sure they would do things very differently if they could go back in time. Like not walking around hospitals and boasting that you shook hands with everybody, for instance.

Amazing isn't it, only 2 days ago they said they were set to open all schools on the 17th May even in red zones which would have been a disaster of course. Now the suddenly see their error. Are they actually starting to take notice of their health experts or did basic commonsense suddenly touch them?
