I find it strange that a drop in 16 ICU beds is spun as positive in the post and can't believe its true. If 35 died then surely the ICU bed take-up has actually gone up by 19......

The drop of 16 was the number of patients on ventilators.

The drop in critical condition patients for the latest day was 76, which was more than double the number of new deaths.

I believe Worldometer says they're tallying 200+ countries and jurisdictions in those rankings.

Even 104 from 180 would be average.

Let him go with his alternative facts.

I truly hope something similar happens here in Bangkok soon!  But I'm not holding my breath.  Education doesn't seem to be a priority here.

"As COVID-19 infections continue to surge in Bangkok with 28 clusters now detected across 19 districts, the Public Health Ministry is planning to inoculate at least five million people by the end of July.

According to Dr Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), authorities are closely monitoring the infection clusters in the capital, with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) separating them into four categories depending on the rate of local transmission and daily new infections.

Attempts to contain the spread of the virus are currently focused on the worker camp in Laksi district, which has reported 885 cases to date."

I was taking it from this:

Transparency International ranked the country at 104 out of 180 surveyed countries in its latest Corruption Perception Index (CPI) in 2020 adding insult to injury.

Yep. But don't you really think that in the end the free jabs are not free jabs and will be paid in full by the powers that be from Thailand tax money. Nothing is free and they will probably get a good rate on each jab.

I see this type of comment time and again in here and am completely baffled by it. What are you guys on? Are you really equating the amount of cases/deaths to how well it is being managed? First world country performing over one million tests per day and reporting findings transparently with no agenda vs once-developing turned autocratic state with a big agenda performing a FRACTION of the tests (what was it 10-20,000?) pushing out numbers piecemeal. Wakey wakey.

The UK only started mass testing after the morgues were overflowing.

Thailand was testing and identifying cases of covid before the UK in January 2020.

Boris handed even started shaking everyone's hand until March.

I am happy it looks like the UK have finally got their act together but it doesn't help the 130,000 already dead in the UK or the million plus dead from the UK strain worldwide.

Note: this below is directly aimed at Thai nationals. Whether they will vaccinate foreign nationals there remains unclear.

The Transport Ministry will use Bang Sue Central Railway Station, covering 13,500 square metres, for walk-in vaccinations of people in Bangkok and surrounding provinces next month.

Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said the venue is being turned into a COVID-19 vaccine station, with the aim of administering 10,000 doses per day. The station will be opened for walk-in vaccinations on June 1st. The Public Health Ministry will provide the vaccine supplies, while the State Railway of Thailand will look after area management and transport.

He added that the station will open from May 24th to 31st exclusively for workers in the public transport sector. Taxi-motorcyclists and drivers of public buses, electric trains and boats can receive their shots during this period.

Though this info sheet below specifically references the possibility of using one's passport as a form of ID to register.

Whole different ranking than the COVID case tally rankings by nation that's posted in this thread.

So far they have been vaccinating the over 60’s and i think in their minds that is now done and dusted. So it’s on to the under 60’s.

But I know of quite a few over 60’s yet to have an appointment for vaccination, starting with my mother in law.

also, 18 years to 60 years is a huge age range. I would have thought 50 to 60 and then 40 to 50 and so on. But if you’re not going to be rigorous in ensuring that each at range has been fully vaccinated, then I suppose just open all the flood gates and get jabbing.

all in all, I have a suspicion that the authorities would like to boast about the top line number of how many people have been vaccinated. For that age and health risk is of no importance whatsoever.

There are 13 million + people in Thailand over 60. They claim that 2.2 million people of all ages have been vaccinated to date so clearly as I said they are of no importance to the government as they would or should have insured that as a minimum 70% of the over 60s be vaccinated first

It is also the same country whose then deputy health minister stated in Feb 2020 that we did NOT need to test test test because we were a 1st world country. Oh and by the way let the Cheltenham races go ahead in March because there is no danger. Thankfully the misjudgement was eventually corrected, albeit a little late for many, and the UK is where it is today.

Country reopening the ‘only hope’ for Bangkok’s Chatuchak market vendors

Most vendors at Bangkok’s Chatuchak market are hoping that the Thai government will reopen the country as soon as possible and allow foreign tourists in again, to help revive their businesses, saying it is their “only hope.”

According to the vendors, half of the famed market’s customers are usually foreigners, especially tourists.

One shoe vendor at the market told Thai PBS that they will close their shop for the next three weeks, because there are no customers.

Not much point reopening when no one wants to come to a country that has let the pandemic get out of control and made no effort to procure enough vaccine in time. They would have nothing to do here and face a high risk of being stranded.

Daily vaccines given update:

The chart below first shows daily doses given in the past day (76,687), with subtotals for first and second shot doses. Then the cumulative total of 2.34 million doses given since Feb. 28, with subtotals for first and second shot doses and the types of vaccines administered.

Thailand has now given first dose COVID vaccines to more than 2 percent of its 70 million population, and fully vaccinated second doses to more than 1 percent of its population.

I believe this article was referring to tourists currently here in Thailand.

Thais also use the market.

If it follows the same pattern as India, it will spread from Bangkok to the countryside with cases falling in Bangkok and growing in other regions and the countryside.  But let's hope it doesn't.

The problem, even now, is the lack of nurses to give the injections. So I think that will be the limiting factor, and not the actual number of doses or the number of people turning up to be vaccinated.

They will probably realize this, and start recruiting nurses in August.

The article says it’s 50:50 thai and tourists. The tourists are specifically stated to be “foreign tourists”.

Well something smells here. There are many clusters around BKK and only 680 positive prisoners. Yesterday in the top 10 new infections globally today no where near it. Interesting. Maybe I'm just being a bit of a cynic. Can't think why.

Testing in prisons is done en masse and announces likewise. So large blips are to be expected. Fiollowed by smaller ones as they do contact tracing on prison staff etc.

Lets' hope she doesn't get any severe side effects from receiving the Sinovac jab. Now that would be embarrassing.

Sinovac review by Thai superstar Chompoo Araya goes viral

Influential star Araya “Chompoo” A. Hargate was going viral again Tuesday, this time for sharing her experience of receiving the government-approved Sinovac vaccine.

Prompted by fans, Araya’s review came amid countrywide doubts and conspiracies regarding the vaccine against the Covid-19 virus produced by Beijing-based biopharmaceutical Sinovac, and as the country is facing its third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Many Thais have sworn off the Sinovac jab and vowed to wait for the arrival of other vaccines, such as Moderna, Pfizer, AstraZeneca, or Johnson & Johnson. However, experts, doctors, and health professionals have encouraged citizens to get whatever inoculation is available and confirmed their safety, stressing that getting immunized is the only means for the country to get out of this pandemic.

Agree. Let's hope they actually put all the numbers together from all of the days and from all the jails and don't somehow forget a few a thousand or 10. One still wonders how many never made the numbers before the cover up (and that's what is was) was exposed. How many pnuemonia deaths in prisons in the last year. That would be a great figure to see but probably can't. Eventually you would hope the all the lies will be exposed but with this country's history of military govts and coups I doubt it very much.

By the way Thailand came in number 8 in the world with new infections on yesterday's covid worldometer. I really, really want some one to defend this and say Thailand is doing a great job.

Edited by dinsdale

Bangkok's daily new COVID case numbers for the past week. The first number in the series at far left shows Bangkok's total COVID cases from May 1-11... Then the daily numbers for May 12-18. Then lastly the total number of Bangkok cases since April 1. Today's new cases tally was less than half of yesterday's record 1,843 number for some unspecified reason.

Exactly lets hope not, the only way to avoid it is through effective testing. So far in this wave there are a total of 84,294 people infected. Of those 28,258 were in Bangkok the rest 55,636 have been in the Provinces although numbers in Provinces have been reducing

As I posted earlier, the age range is huge. Even the UK with its developed mass vaccination drive has only just started working on the 30 to 40 year olds. Thailand hasn’t even started is mass vaccinations yet and they seem to be just opening it up to everybody!

I think that is limited to the real "hot spots".  In most of the country they are only registering the over elderly and high risk.

Where there is an uncontrolled outbreak, like there is in the Bangkok slums, going in with mass vaccination for everyone is the only recourse.  But these are specific places. They did the same before in Samut Sakhon.

Although reported COVID cases haven't been increasing in the outlying provinces, today's update was interesting in that it showed new COVID deaths in 17 different provinces out of 77 total, which AFAIK is either the broadest or one of the broadest geographic death tolls Thailand has seen thus far from the pandemic.

It's not been uncommon for Bangkok to represent half or more of the daily COVID fatalities being reported, and usually one or two each from a handful of other provinces. But in today's numbers, besides Bangkok, there were three other provinces with two fatalities each and then 13 other provinces with one each.

Yesterday in comparison, Bangkok accounted for 18 of the 25 new deaths, with seven other provinces each reporting one.

Let's hope today was not the beginning of a trend in that regard.
