BURMESE WORKER IN COMA AFTER RECEIVING ELECTRIC SHOCK IN PATTAYA

A Burmese worker is in a coma resulting from an electrical short circuit which was caused when he lifted steel rods against an electrical cable. The contractor had neglected to install insulation to cover the cable.

On the 21st May 2007, at 9 am, Pol.Sub.Lt. Nathapol Arkaruen, Banglamung Inspector, Chonburi, received a report that a construction worker was seriously injured after receiving an electric shock.

The accident was at a shop-house construction project on Soi Pornpraphanimitr (Siam country Club Golf Course) Moo 5, Nongprue, Banglamung, Chonburi, He then went with his team to investigate.

At the shop-house construction site, there was a large number of Burmese workers, as well as, Thais discussing the accident. The victim had been transferred to Banglamung Hospital earlier. He was a Burmese citizen named Mr. Khao (18). He had numerous burns around his body and was in severe pain.

After questioning the witnesses, it was determined that Mr.Khao and a number of other Burmese workers were doing the concrete work to build a shop-house for an investor. Mr. Khao was carrying steel rods up to the second floor.

He inadvertently brushed the steel rods against the bare high voltage electric cable, which runs across the front part of the building. The electricity short circuited and burned Mr.Khao severely. His worker friends immediately took him to the hospital.

The police declared that the accident could have been caused by the carelessness of the worker, as well as, the negligence of the contractor who didn't install insulation to cover the electrical cable. The police have brought in the contractor for investigation and will process the case accordingly.
