Solar novice here, where do you make the connection to your home power. Is it in the consumer unit or can you plug into the nearest ring circuit

You probably won't have ring finals, they are a peculiarly British thing, strictly 20A radials here.

Anyway.

A small grid tie, say up to 2kW, can be plugged into an outlet and will function just fine. Anything bigger needs arrangements in the CU, it's not rocket science and any knowledgeable DIYer should be fine.

 

If you are going hybrid or off-grid, arrangements are rather more complex.
