Thailand can open it's doors any time it wants. But until it's population is vaccinated it won't be on the green lists of foreign countries and hence most tourists will go elsewhere.

 

How will an Aussie come here if Australia won't allow international tourism? How about a Brit, who faces 10 days quarantine on return to the UK because Thailand isn't on the green list? When will China allow it's citizens to travel without major inconvenience?

 

This isn't Thailand's decision to make but their hubris prevents them from seeing this.

If you want to change it you will need lots of bulldozers its not just soi s6 lots of small soi especiailly around back of tucom  Golf and sex keep it simple

Similar thing when my sister and her family visited Hua Hin. I popped down for the weekend and we went out for a meal and stumbled upon Soi Bintabaht.

 

My 9 year old niece (at the time) spotted them a mile off and kept asking why the men were dressed as women. To compound that awkward conversation, my sister turned around to see a bargirl giving the universal "BJ" gesture to my brother-in-law behind her back.

As I have said before, Pattaya should concentrate on what it does well. Cheap sleazy bars full of girls is what it can do better than most cities in the world and is world famous for it already.  Why try to reinvent itself into yet another bland family resort where it has to compete with Spain? 

When I first came to Thailand it was not to be with families - I came to get away from them and experience a totally different type of holiday. Personally I preferred Samui 20 years ago but since families took over there Pattaya was one of the few interesting places to go even though I now am with my family. 

As someone else pointed out - who wants to go to Khoa San Road anymore since it got modernised? 20 years ago it was always my first stop. Now I avoid it altogether. It used to be interesting and an experience now it is just ugly and a chore.

Pattaya evolved, what worked flourished same as Khoa San had. Bring in the snobs with their big redevelopment plans and all that will be lost. Spend the money on things that compliment what's already there - nicer beaches and improved travel links are all that it needed. 

Don't make it bland as we already have Tenerife for that and Pattaya can never compete with it.

How on earth do they expect or plan to have it as a family resort where there are hardly any foot paths around, hardly any zebra crossings, not that anyone stops anyways, no parks , no kids playgrounds , most locals including officials can hardly speak any English but bark out words in English rudely and abruptly. As if thai is the only polite language , English does not need please or thank you or low tone instead of screaming.

 

place has worked as is for half a century , let it be.

 

If they so determined to have “families” develop brand new family areas away from walking street. 
 

build new sidewalks , parks and then have  much greater chance at success

Perhaps they should have a wander around Pattaya then check out many other family friendly tourist destinations and see where Pattaya ranks. What they are trying to take away is the only thing really worth coming for in comparison. It is the sex industry that built Pattaya, no other way around it.

What about Pattayas Art museums, and world famous parks.....

As always, Thailand is doing the exact opposite of what logic would suggest.

 

Rational politicians would exploit the most reliable and durable sector of tourists Thailand always had: sex tourists and retirees who just want to enjoy the rest of their lives a little bit, while at the same time giving all the hungry family members tied to the women in the entertainment sector hope and food.

 

But no, make sh*thole Pattaya (suffering from endless road construction, potholes, almost no green vegetation or parks anymore) even less attractive than it is... ????

The current Chinese vaccines in Thailand are only really a "quick fix" to stop people dying.  They are less effective when it comes to spread and to variants.  Thailand should have one eye on getting people vaccinated with whatever they can ASAP, while keeping up the new normal, with future plans for decent vaccines that stand a change of reducing spread enough to possibly stop the virus completely.  Hopefully AZ can eventually do that, but they have to accept that they may still need to aim for Pfizer and Moderna.

 

But this obviously means a lot of covid, but not ICU/death, for the next year or two.

We will probably end up with yearly vaccinations same as flu, to cope with new variants for years to come. 

I saw on the internet the other day so it must be true, Everybody who has been vaccinated will die within 2 years

I do see Pattaya's demise, although I think it will take some time before what many of us knew of the Pattaya of old just peters out. I don't believe Pattaya will roar back to life when borders do eventually reopen for unrestricted travel. I think a combination of factors such as many bars closed for good, lingering fears about the virus coming back, higher airfares, increased hassles with international travel and a continuing change in the landscape as more service providers move to online models (online escort services, Tinder, cams, OnlyFans etc.) will all send Pattaya along a new path. The nightlife will still exist but it will be smaller than before Covid came along, be less fun and as such demand will drop year after year.....which was happening pre-Covid. I wish this wasn't the case but I just don't think it's going to burst back in to life like when you flick on a lightbulb.

pattaya without nightlife is as useful as a snow shuffle in sahara
