Foreign retirees arrested for overstay after failing to pay 1 million baht rent on luxury Bangkok condo

Naew Na reported on the case of two old foreign pensioners who immigration said were cunning and up to tricks at a luxury apartment in the expensive area of Sathon, Bangkok.

They were named only as Rose and Rees and their nationality was not reported. Thai immigration had a picture of one with a walking stick.

This was on a vinyl board at the briefing for the press at the Immigration Bureau in Suan Phlu attended by IB chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang yesterday.

The couple retired to Thailand in March last year and had stamps so they could stay until May 22nd of this year.

The owner of an apartment block who rents rooms for 50-100,000 baht a month to Europeans and Americans had rented them a room.

But they repeatedly refused to pay the rent until nearly one million in arrears had built up. They cited excuses like Covid, their age and human rights.

They were told to move but refused. They were getting drunk and making trouble for other residents at the apartment.

Then one of the couple fell over and banged their head by the lift. The owner got them to hospital. They fled the hospital in their hospital clothes and went to treat themselves at home.

They then posted messages about the owner in public places.

The owner said they did everything to try and help and accommodate the couple but the rent built up. They asked the advice of immigration who said it was not their concern as they were legally in Thailand at that stage.

They advised the owner to file a civil case for eviction which they did. The court ruled that the couple must leave but still they refused to go.

The owner tried to have this enforced without success and finally immigration took over.

The couple were arrested on overstay and handed over to the Thung Mahamek police for prosecution.

Now they will face a blacklist and deportation, suggests Thaivisa.

"Many?"  I have not come across, or heard of anyone like this in over 20 years living here. I once met a farang begging near Patpong trying to sell postcards, but that's it.

Yeah right, beware good Thai people (Khon Thais in French) these white people of undetermined nationality are all obnoxious crooks, endangering our Kingdom, a lot more than those "procuring" the vaccines.

The way to deal with such repeated rent dodgers is to change the lock after several demands to pay rend were ignored, the owners would be in they full rights to do so...

Many old geezers like this around. They claim they are old and have no money and people should have sympathy for them. So they don't pay rent and walk out of restaurants with unpaid bills and bitch and whine about everything but in fact are shrewd high level narcissists  with no sense of responsibility and who care nothing about others.

I'd guess that their current accommodation is much less to their liking!

Never seen this type. I see angry old men but most are nice enough.  I have have seen a few that are sincerely in financial trouble and this is sad.  We will all get old and hope to have planned well enough to do it semi-gracefully.

Currently staying at the somewhat less salubrious IDC Resort and Spa at a fraction of the price.

The presenter is smiling under the mask and the audience is surely laughing.  This could all be in jest.  Two older men having some giggles and hopefully everybody else sees the humor with the exception of the landlord.

So now 21 days of overstay is an arrestable offence for which you will be blacklisted according to this report. Has the rules changed since this ?

https://thailandtravelessentials.com/thailand-overstay/#:~:text=For one day overstay in,of 1 year is applied.

Actually the rules say :

"Note that if an immigration officer catches a person who has overstayed his visa in Thailand, he or she might be taken to jail or nearest immigration office for further investigation."

So these were caught by an immigration officer and arrested. I have often seen prople asking about overstay fines on this forum and most replies go in the line of "Just don't get stopped by the police."

This story simply does not pass the smell test. A few things do not add up. First of all, 100,00 baht a month for a room? Yeah, right. Second, no Thai landlord would let a foreigner stay in their place for almost a year, without paying rent. It would never happen. They would have a multitude of remedies available to them.

So, as is often the case, there is far more going on here, than meets the eye.

I had a retiree friend who ran out of money.
He jumped.

It mentions being blacklisted. The rules state you may be after 30 days. They were not , only 21 days. That aside I think there is something dubious or undisclosed about this whole story

I don't think you got a clue about the more upper class buildings. I am in an house in BKK is around 100k per month inclusive eclectic. Other friends are in condo's that go up to 80k too. So its not that strange its just that you have no idea about the upper class buildings.

Personally if i had to pay i would not pay that much for a room, but still plenty of expensive big condos and houses in the center of BKK.

Planned to be in the correct country can be beneficial. Huge differences even in so called wealthy countries . A sign of wealth is how the old people are cared for .

These two here definitely seem to be crooks, yes.

That certainly depends on the laws. Are you sure that’s what the laws here allow? Where I come from, you cannot just do that, even if your tenant is repeatedly not paying the rent. It’s incredibly difficult to get someone evicted because of tenant rights and an individual’s home and privacy being so sacred almost like human rights (maybe those retirees are from my home country and that’s why they talked about human rights)

I hope the Government dont take this as an excuse to add

a levy on us for Farangs that don't pay their rent ,like they are

going to do for those that skip their bills at hospitals..

Room scam has reached the end.  Now looking for free flight back to their own country.  bet that they have no money for flight out if they are deported.

I hope they are no from UK so its not my embassy that has to buy them a ticket home.

As a landlord in UK I feel sorry for their Thai landlord who has been taken for a ride.  With tenants like this, any attempt to be reasonable is only taken as a sigh of weakness and gulibility

And for sure paid 1 month in advance and 2 as a guarantee.

Why Thais always call it a room?

There’s always something dubious or undisclosed for the ThaiVisa Sherlocks when farangs’

bad behaviors make the news.
