anchadian
In his recent address to the nation, the Prime Minister stated that the government is determined to reopen the country in 120 days, with major tourist provinces reopening gradually as they are ready. Prime Minister General Prayut Chan-o-cha said that Phuket -- with its Phuket Sandbox campaign -- will serve as the pilot project for the national reopening initiative. The Premier acknowledged the risks associated with this major decision, but reiterated that the government prioritizes the well being of the people and that the nation is strong enough to weather such risks. anchadian
Pattaya independently orders 100,000 doses of the Sinopharm Covid -19 vaccine to expediate Pattaya vaccination campaign Pattaya City has ordered 100,000 doses of the Sinopharm Covid -19 vaccine from the Chulabhorn Royal Academy, confirmed the Pattaya City Mayor today, marking a major step after the Thai government recently allowed private organizations and governments to order Covid-19 vaccines with their own budgets. He did not say anywhere the virus is not a big deal, that those who got ill deserved it and that what's happening around the world is not terrible. We are all entitled to our opinion here; and his view is shared by many and backed by a ton of data. Just this morning, I was looking over the statistics for my home country (The Netherlands) and it is indeed the case that most severe infections and deaths concentrate around the elderly and chronically sick. That does not mean it's not terrible for these people to get sick and perish though. FYI, if you look at his posts, he's edited them to remove multiple comments I was responding to But just to bring you up to speed, he literally said, "covid is no problem for healthy people with good working immune systems" and then made comments about how because weaker, sicker and older people are the only ones dying it's no big deal (where he intimated that it's a thinning of the herd) and that people shouldn't be upset because it's god's will for them to be targeted. And then he spent an entire post talking about how 4 million dead isn't terrible Believe me, I know that there are unfortunately many of you that share this horrific and selfish opinion that completely lacks anything that could even remotely be considered to be empathy. And I'm going to call it out every time
Tropposurfer
These references are not todays but may still be relevant. This Indian variant is not known to be less or more dangerous than the earlier / original viral strains (level of dangerousness as yet not known to medical experts) https://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-56844925. It's worrying and scary for Thailand if it gets out in big numbers given the low numbers of vaccinations, as this Indian variant appears, in India, to be killing a lot of people very quickly. https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thailand-sees-first-local-cases-indian-covid-19-variant-2021-05-21/ The numbers being found and reported are borderline and floating near the 'increasing' measure on the death rate scale. https://graphics.reuters.com/world-coronavirus-tracker-and-maps/countries-and-territories/thailand/ https://www.lowyinstitute.org/the-interpreter/thailand-s-overcrowded-prisons-hit-covid-19-surge

anchadian
Five new cases being reported this evening on Phuket island and 24 patients in hospital. Although it’s good to have single digit new cases, they are finding it hard to have zero infections even with strict entry restrictions. Only 15 days to go before the #PhuketReopening. https://twitter.com/ThaiNewsReports/status/1405144219660914688
anchadian
Closure of Phuket bars and alcohol restrictions turn off prospective foreign tourist says survey Survey does show that there is interest in visiting Phuket and that some are already booked to come after July 1st. However, there is frustration that the island’s famous nightlife will be closed and over efforts to control visitors, including restrictions such as a ban on the consumption of alcohol while dining. It comes as top Siriraj Hospital medical expert, Dr Prasit Watanapa, has warned the government to abort the planned reopening. A Thai Examiner opinion poll shows that nearly 92% of foreigners disagree with the decision by authorities on the island of Phuket to close bars and entertainment venues during the July 1st reopening of the well-known island destination with some travellers with links to Thailand already booked for arrival on the island after July 1st while others have cancelled their plans specifically because of last-minute restrictions and regulations. It comes as there is still unease about the plan because of mixed messaging from senior officials at both a local and national level as well as strong last-minute reservations expressed in the last 24 hours by one of the country’s most respected medical experts. Minister of Tourism and Sports Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn who only in the last week indicated that the Phuket Sandbox reopening may not go ahead because the island was not ready even as the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) boss Yuthasak Supasorn was visiting the world class tourist destination giving assurances to the contrary. The continuous mixed messaging on the initiative is making many commercial operators nervous while last-minute restrictions and conditions are both irking and putting off potential tourists thinking of availing of the proposition but who also have other more convenient alternatives. (Right) Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed on Monday that the proposal has been forwarded to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) who will review it again on Friday. https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2021/06/16/phuket-bar-ban-turns-off-foreign-tourists/

There are no data metrics or milestones set, from which it can be determined whether the country should or should not open. i can’t shake the feeling that this country is bumbling through this on a day to day basis. I'd have to agree the virus sets the timeline. Look at UK, planned to open fully by 21st June, postponed another 4 weeks unless overturned by vote in Parliament. Even then there is no guarantee that all restrictions will be relaxed at that date. The way the delta variant is spreading in the UK puts doubt in my mind to the reported situation in Thailand. It was always a provisional date. Yes the delta variant is spreading in the UK, but it's not causing a lot of deaths or serious illness so far. I believe they will review the data in 2 weeks time, and if it still appears that the vaccines have more or less wiped out the potency of Covid then it's likely all restrictions will be removed before 19th July.
