It isn't the alcohol.  There are 3 places within 200 yards of my condo where I can sit down with a beer.  It's the atmosphere, at all those 3, I'd be in an enclosed place, with no music or entertainment, I only bother about once a fortnight.

I just want to sit outside chatting, with a beer in front of me, watching the world go by.  Is that too much to ask?

I understand your sentiments . Not been one to sit at home drinking . But i have adapted well

Except...it is though.

Even if you don't enjoy nightlife of any kind and are home and tucked into bed by 10pm every night, do you...never lift a weight; never swim; never get a massage; never want to travel without quarantine to other parts of the country, let alone other countries; enjoy sitting diagonally or at another table from your partner/friends; enjoy having to wear a mask every time you step outdoors, including in your private motor vehicle...

Some of those, for some of us, even individually are huge hinderances (closed gyms and closed borders in my case), but collectively they certainly constitute a material annoyance for most people.

That doesn't even take into account the constant mental pressure of keeping up with the changing regulations both here and abroad and the concern of watching businesses close and people struggle.

but most of them don't apply to the many many people who live in the countryside.

Me, never swim, other than in the sea, lift weights, not unless its a large beer, massage, can get one free from the missus, have no problem sitting together or with friends across the tables or at the bar, never diagonal .Perhaps you should move to a better area that does not have these "restrictions "

The only ones that apply to the majority of people are wearing masks, but only in some public buildings and possibly to some of them that want to travel overseas.

as far as travel round the country, never stopped me or friends, from going to many places, with the exception of a few places further south, like Bangkok, Pattaya, which is no hardship to miss anyway

So for most people life does go on as near as normal

Yes. As long as the hospitals ICU's aren't being taxed to the limit, that's a very strong indicator that the virus is currently being held at bay. It very nearly overwhelmed Bangkok and few other places that cater to certain kinds of activity or have lots of workers in adequately protective work situations.

were the army hospitals full of ICU patients too, or did they stay empty most of the time due to lack of patients ?

You just need the fruity drinks on your balcony overlooking the sea.

Did it "very nearly overwhelm" Bangkok?  I must have missed that.  Anyway, glad it's over now.????

strong restrictions ?

Maybe where you live, but out in the sticks where the majority of people live, very very few restriction, most of which are ignored anyway/

Why is it so hard for some people to understand you have a much more chance of death or injury going to the shops, than from this virus

Dam right about that...

Years ago in Scotland the pubs didn't open on Sundays

And Hotels had very restrictive opening hours, remember the "Bonnyfided traveller rule" where you had to travel a minimum of 3 miles to get a drink, the good old days, my <deleted>.

We might as well be living on a island, as we can't go anywhere and if they check our vaccines with either the chinses ones or the AZ how many countries will let us in? It's a sad state of affairs for many. So stop pretending that things are going to get better and bring in the good vaccines without all the talk that they are coming soon.

Rubbish! The mortality rate in the UK is no different than previous years! Look at freedom of information burials and cremations are no different over the past 5/6 years

You might be right on the UK, but there is plenty of excess mortality in other countries for 2020.

or 2021. Like in Brazil or India.

How can you do that? Unfortunately eople die in a pandemic. But unless numbers are critically high and hospitals being overwhelmed, life has to continue.

I understand that people die for whatever reasons they do,  it's part of life, but here we are talking about Thailand and their poor/non existing performance/management in handling the pandemic

Before the latest enhanced lockdown, hospitals came perilously close to being overwhelmed. What do you think would be the outcome if all restrictions were removed?

And why were the  field hospitals created in the first place? So patients could enjoy a change of scenery?

The Bangkok Post has the most information about this. Use this search term

bangkok intensive care units nearly full thanks to covid

The CCSA said about 30,000 people were being treated in hospitals and in field hospitals constructed to make up for the lack of enough hospital beds and intensive care units, especially in Bangkok.

Essential shopping is needed from time to time.

I use Lazada when I can . Much better than running all over town for building maintenance materials.

Yes, see your point , but somehow i have to go along with there ban on alcohol as that was one of the reasons that the infection rates around Thailand took off again recently .
