Jewelry Export shrinks due to slow down in global economy

Chairman of the Committee on Gems and Jewelry under the Thai Chamber of Commerce indicates that the country’s export of jewelry during the first quarter of this year has dropped due to a slow down in global economy.

The committee’s chairman Wichai Asasaskorn (วิชัย อัศรัสกร) reports that the export of jewelry during the first four months of 2007 has decreased in comparison with the same period of last year which saw the jewelry export value of 1.3 U.S. billion or 0.5% growth. Apart from the slow down in global economy, the appreciation of the baht is another factor contributing to the decrease in the jewelry export.

Aside from Thailand, jewelry export in India and China have also shrunk. Mr Wichai suggests Thai jewelry exporters to adjust themselves to deal with the situation and affirms that the country still has high potential in compete in the global gems and jewelry market industry.
