Thai authorities propose tighter curbs as COVID-19 deaths climb

BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's health ministry said on Thursday it had proposed new travel curbs and tighter restrictions in high-risk areas to contain COVID-19 cases, as the country reported a daily record of 75 deaths from the coronavirus.

 

Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha is due to consider the new restrictions in a meeting on Friday.

 

"The health ministry will propose measures first to limit travel and so that people do not leave their homes unless necessary," the ministry's permanent secretary, Kiatiphum Wongrajit, told reporters, noting a halt to inter-provincial travel was also being proposed.

 

Other measures being proposed include closing down non-essential venues and areas that attract crowds, Kiatiphum said.

 

The rules would be in place for 14 days and would cover the Bangkok metropolitan area and "buffer zones", Kiatiphum said, without elaborating.

 

"This has similar intensity as April 2020," he said referring to lockdown measures last year that included a nationwide curfew.

 

Currently, Thailand has in place measures in "high-risk zones", including Bangkok and surrounding provinces, to close malls early and prohibit dining in at restaurants, but they have not been able to halt an acceleration of infections in the past month.

 

Thailand's COVID-19 task force on Thursday reported 7,058 new coronavirus cases, taking the total number in the country to 308,230. The country has recorded 2,462 fatalities since the pandemic started last year.

during the first lockdown there was no obligation to stay home, but there was curfew 22-5 and prohibition.

Probably those 2 measures should be imposed, just to remain population of risks.

Only a full lockdown, no work, no travel, no non-essential shops open etc, will slow the spread of delta strain and give health authorities a chance to do their jobs, but it may be too late for that.

I think you're right, it will also take longer than 2 weeks, a 2 week lockdown will just act as a short circuit breaker but thats all

You’re right. They did the same mistake as all other countries did before them. Didn’t have the balls to make a tough call and lockdown when things started to get worse, hoping instead that things would not get worse. Now you’re in the unpleasant situation other countries have been before, you know you have to lockdown but you also know that a short lockdown won’t be enough.

Buffer zones like what the rest of Thailand. Do they not know it's already spreading and is growing daily in the outer provinces.  Tools the lot of them.  14 days is much to short as far as I see.

You obviously came nowhere near Phuket then?

 

Phuket is divided into districts and then sub districts. Last years lockdown was a hard lockdown. No travel allowed between sub districts, road blocks at each exist and entrance point, food handed to residents who could not access shops via district headman. Curfew, just about everything ordered closed aside from essential businesses. Lasted 4 to 6 weeks and longer for some sub districts.

so could still go essential shopping ? So how will that stop anything 

Look inside Makro Tesco, even 7-11, see any social distancing, full mask wearing ?

You think Thais can afford not to work  too? Who will provide for them . You ?

Nope, nowhere near , live in the real Thailand, not the tourist spots, so no bother. Live like the locals, do as the locals

Barring travel between provinces makes perfect sense. The virus can run free within a province, but the borders to each province will of course remain irrevocably sealed forever, no exceptions.

In the space of 6 weeks in the UK the Delta variant went like wildfire from Zero to 95% of infections. There is nothing anybody can do to stop that it's so infectious. 

Yesterday around 37.000 new cases (under Alpha it was 2.000) including some double jabbed but only 37 (0.1%) deaths (mostly lower) because 64% of adults are fully vaccinated and 86% have had one jab. Because of that we are going out of lockdown shortly. 

I fear for Thailand with such poor vaccine protection but pray I'm wrong.

Restrictive measures including travel restrictions proposed amid rising COVID-19 deaths

 

 

Thailand’s Ministry of Public Health is proposing to the operations centre of the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) today (Thursday), further restrictive measures such as travel restrictions from and to Bangkok and five nearby provinces for at least 14 days as well as closures of more venues, as daily new COVID-19 death toll surged to a new high today of 75, while infections also soared to 7,059.

 

According to the Disease Control Department (DCD), the proposed travel restrictions are to be called “self-bubble and seal”, with the aim of limiting travel from home, to increase working from home, to negate the need for 70% percent of the normal travel by office workers. The new measures, covering over Bangkok, Nonthaburi, Pathum Thani, Samut Sakhon, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Prakan, are an attempt to contain the rapid spread of the Delta coronavirus variant if approved.

 

Public Health Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrachit, who chaired the Public Health Ministry’s emergency operations centre (EOC) meeting this morning, said that the main reason for the proposed restrictions, is to reduce the number of daily new infections in Bangkok and its vicinities and to ensure that the health system has the capacity to help those who need it the most.

Phuket, now would that be a small island by any chance? Rather easy to isolate due to the abundance of sea water.
