If you’re using a forum for your source of facts there’s just nothing I could say so…..????

Lots of people living in Thailand posting on this forum, if we don't have the facts between us, who you gonna trust?

Some journalist that's never been to Thailand?

The Thai government?

Prayut and Anutin?

Just reading the posts on Thaivisa would give you an awful impression though, I admit.

We tell it as it is.

Most western men come here with one thing in mind.

Life here is good!

Sure there's a few nutters constantly ranting about the government and vaccines ...... but most of us don't really care about those.

While 10 years to get wings maybe true 20 years means you have lost touch with the real World and modern times.   So while you may brag about being a Thai expert you have no cred in real life.

Anyone who spends a major portion of their life living in the "concrete jungle"  is........... well,  not the same species as me.    Look, i did spend a few years over my lifetime in cities ( though SF in the 70's could hardly be compared to places like NY, LA, BKK  )

Sleeping in a box,  then going out into hordes of people and vehicles, then returning to the box , day after day after day ;  ok,  it does make many people feel comfortable.  Of course cities are where there are air conditioned better paying jobs,  i get it. And more "social life" .   And that all important factor governing soooo many peoples lives:  convenience.  (and some other reasons that the city dwellers point out when asked) . I guess my point is :  I do not for a second believe that they know what the people of the country they are living in are really like.  Even if they have spent a week or two roughing it out in the village a few times over 20 years.

I don't know exactly what it is that makes me feel ill when living a city life.   Only know that some grass,   trees,   open space,  birds,  and seeing a farmer or two make me feel good.

To each his own .   And for each to find his own meaning .

Really difficult for me to believe that even a few of you would use TV and other social media sites for trusted information…no wonder you spend so much time trying to convince us your “opinions” are valid!

***Isn’t anyone interested in facts anymore or just opinions that support your opinion??

Ok, so you mean that you can form an educated opinion out of reading the news? Right, if only it was true. I wish you good luck, though. ????

It seems for some people critical thinking is just beyond their ken.

Where do you get information? I think you are a one stat wonder?

Try and add something to a discussion rather than crushing negativity. You may begin the healing process for yourself by doing that, it won't be just for my benefit.

Say what!!

Nah, now you make me disappointed, Thunglom. I understand critical thinking. A severe critical condition is when somebody reads news and believe them so much as they choose to form an opinion out of them.

I really do think you should continue to look to TV and other forums plus social media for your information!

Please carry on ????

With over 30 years here the most important thing I've learnt is not to heavily socialise with other farang. If I wanted to do that I'd be back in UK.

Why not?

You obviously don't have to socialize with all of them. But there are many interesting farangs out there.

And, believe it or not, some of them even go regularly out to the bars - at least pre Covid.

It always amuses me how some posters come on this forum and state how they avoid foreigners...

What are the doing on a discussion forum populated by foreigners then ????

And, what is wrong with them that they specifically target foreigners to avoid ?

Yes, there are a lot of nutters here, many foreign nutters, many Thai nutters....  they’re easy to spot and easy to avoid, but just avoiding someone based on their ‘apparent non-Thainess’ highlights some underlying flaws with the mentality of such a claimant such that it is usually they who warrant avoidance !!!!

Well I don’t know what a one stat wonder is but…..when I need information I go to National Geographic, Nova, Forbes, New York Times Science News or even How Stuff Works just as an example!

Theres tons more legitimate sites available…..most of them you have to join up and some even have a membership fee (not many charge for their info) but well worth it I have found!

Im a reader so they keep me busy when I’m not working on our little farm????

There’s some truth to what you say …I think…but I tend to stay away from most falang because they need a shave…smell like they need a shower….generally negative attitude and most often look like they’re homeless! They just don’t have anything to offer.

Guilty by association in a small town so to speak….

On the other hand the good people I’ve met just like any where else in the world presented themselves well, smiled openly with a generally positive attitude and actually added something to my day! I always try to meet them again somewhere along the line!

It's clear you don't know how to read and analyse media. I have found this with my Uni students - they read but never critically - I have to give them all a course in critical thinking.

By what you’ve written in the past I seriously doubt you’re giving anyone courses in anything!

More like a big wind bag…always upset because people aren’t picking up what you’re laying down and constantly dropping hints about your status how important you are????

Run along now Thunglom…

I've found these people are often pensions/insurance/financial scammers.

The respectable front is to draw in the unwary.

Never trust anyone that smiles a lot!

PS.

Foreign university lecturers ........  often working illegally without work permits, educational qualifications not good enough to get the higher paid high school teaching jobs.

I’m a country boy…my Dad was a veterinarian and a farmer…

I spent the last 30 years in the City…it’s not easy living in a city…just different issues and dangers but mostly stress!

I now live on four rai in the country and have to agree…it’s a completely different world with different people…but that’s the same in any country!

You will never be able to explain country living and country people to city dwellers…I think easier to go the other way????it’s concerning and frustrating for us to hear people who live in the City or even a Town tell us in all encompassing statements….all about what Thailand is but once again same in any country.

I’m a bit of both City Mouse and Country Mouse but finding it easy to go back to my roots ????

Many of us that really dislike living in a box ( apt, condo)  still want to be near a large town or small city

for the availability of shopping,  health care, a bit of social life.   I have lived in the sticks on occasions but prefer being closer in.

That said,  i spend most of my time outdoors ........... and try to look at the nature around me more than the metal and concrete.

I’m the same! I don’t think I would enjoy living in the remote wilderness with no access to anything but each to their own.

We live 2 km’s out of Samoeng further up the mountain and our driveway is difficult to discern!

Trees shrubs and vines make it almost impossible to see us in here and most Thais respect for a closed gate give us almost total privacy!

We are five minutes from Tesco and the market and hospital, police etc.

Our population is Thai, Hmong and Karin….shy but friendly for the most part….a handful of falang but rarely seen! I’ve noticed how things tense up when falang arrive at the market so assumed must be the same when I arrive….do my best to be quiet and respectful.

Ex-newbies who have paid attention are then on probation for about the next ten years. In this period it is important to get further experience and balance. By the end of that - let's say 20 years residence - we should have a person who is blessed with information and knowledge - but who is still “ngong” (suitably flummoxed) in appropriate measure.

You see, not being a newbie is not about always getting things right. It’s about appreciating that despite the knowledge you could still be wrong.

The paragraph above the last two sentences, is only a fraction of a giant know it all explanation and rule setting for how newbies reacts and how you can define one. Sounds to me like the whole article and especially the named paragraph mix very bad with the last two sentences of the copied information above. It does also sound like it´s written by a person who does not have the knowledge he could still be wrong.

Just wondering, does that make you a newbie, rooster?

" I go to National Geographic, Nova, Forbes, New York Times Science News or even How Stuff Works just as an example!" - It is fairly obvious that you are more interested in the messenger than the message - like so many people you are uncritical about what you read or events context.

I doubt if you ever touch hard copy or consider primary and secondary sources either....but you seem unaware of any of that.

Im a pretty straight forward guy who’s travelled and lived a full life and over those years I’ve learned to pick out the BS artist in the room!

Cheers now….ok??

"big reader"???? -

Sadly you give me the strong impression that you have no idea what critical thinking is or even understand the difference between search and research.
