Thammanat denies saying he's ready to be next PM - Chuwit makes supportive comments

Picture Daily News

Agriculture and Cooperatives minister Captain Thammanat Prompao cried "fake news" after a picture of him appeared on social media saying he was ready and waiting to be the next Thai prime minister.

The minister has courted controversy since it was revealed that he was involved in a heroin smuggling case in Australia for which he served time.

Captain Thammanat denied saying he was ready to be PM and that he was "acting 30th PM of Thailand". The picture carried the name of a media organisation, said Sanook who made no attempt to conceal the name "Top TV".

The minister who is also the head of the ruling Palang Pracharat party said he was instructing his legal team to prosecute the poster and people who shared the fake news as it had damaged him and created misunderstanding.

Meawhile Daily News weighed in on the story by quoting former nightclub owner, playboy, politician, presenter and critic Chuwit Kamonwisit who made a Facebook post of his own.

Chuwit said that he had heard of the name of Capt Thammanat nearly 20 years ago when he was serving jail time in Bangkok.

He made a cryptic comment about Thai prime ministers not speaking and not being heard.

He said that Capt Thammanat was a quick political learner, mixes well with the elite and was an enterprising character.

This, he said, was ideal for someone to be a politician or a gangster.

But he was not yet ready to be a prime minister despite these "qualities".

Saying that he probably did not make the remark about wanting to be PM, Chuwit continued by saying that those who lay claim to wanting to be a PM don't make it.

It goes to the quiet ones who don't make a big deal about wanting to be PM and just get the position almost by surprise.

Then in reference to the time served by the current PM he referred to a "farang" saying about a "seven years itch".

A seven year itch is usually used when referring to the time in a marriage when boredom starts to set it, notes ASEAN NOW.

Prayuth Chan-ocha has repeatedly said in recent days that he intends to continue and see out his term while speculation is rife in the media about who a successor might be.

However, Capt Thammanat would be a highly controversial figure because of his own less than transparent background much of which he denies having taken place despite assurances out of Australia.

Just when you thought they couldn't be any more ...... (fill in the blanks, if you like).

Makes it sound like there would be no due process (like elections) and simply a matter of the outgoing guy polishing the seat of the chair for him!

Where there is smoke there is fire.

Would not surprise me to see this happen.

Could Thamannat be the one to bring Thaksin back? Thaksin then pledges his allegiance to number 1 (and with that comes much of the nations allegiance) and everyone’s happy.

If he was made PM then Thailand would become the Hub of Heroin Smugglers and growers as his Cabinet would have many in position who have helped him to make his way to the top by selling and transporting his product.

No. I want another General via another coup, and not some "Captain".

(it's a proven formula)

So, you military goons, put your backs into it already!

And the murder charge was a misunderstanding too

While he's not green enough, nor yellow enough, honestly, having him as pm seems strangely logical for thailand.

Kind of a toss-up between him and Big Joke.

Lose/lose.

Good point - he only made captain?

This is the Thai army with soooo many generals.

Can A Felon Run For (US) President?

Relevance? None.

But I think the thamanat argument is that he is not a felon in the eyes of thailand.

Chuwit is always good for a laugh and for speaking his mind.

He is even honest (when it suits him).

Even Thailand could surely not risk the derision of the rest of the world over this.  Bill Gates will speak out and this will not happen; if he can get cables buried here, drug-smuggling Thai PM's will be easy meat.

during pandemic his drug experience might come handy.

During any crisis drug consumption rises, desperate people turn to false dreams.

What has this to do with a discussion about Thai politics?

Nothing, but USA politics has a way of sneaking into the most  diverse of subjects here. Can't shut them up!

One fact alone that such a news are circulating suggests change is coming irrespective of what Prayut thinks or wants

Look, we've been down that road.

He's already been cleared on this question, as of 6 May 2021.

Deputy PM and the regime's "legal expert" Wissanu Krea-ngam backed-up this decision on 7 May 2021.

The court ruled that the MP and cabinet minister has not been convicted or sentenced for an applicable offence in Thailand and therefore his election as an MP was valid as was his appointment as a cabinet minister by the Prime Minister in July 2019.

https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2021/05/06/thamanat-gets-all-clear-from-top-court/

I see citing the Thai constitution that was likely the basis of that decision is wasted space on here. Noted.

Off topic posts about a "person convicted of a felony can run for the office of President of the United States of America" have been removed as well as the replies.

Now this is clear.... he is a gangster.. and happily it is fake news that he will be the new PM .. so he can't be  it anymore... because if he would become the new PM than this was not fake news...

If he could turn the place around, I don't think he would be so much of a laughing stock.

He might have some good connections for more vaccines

I was going to say just as much as a loaded gun pointing to my son's head telling him not to talk about a certain institution in anything other than terms of adoration.

Hmmm... seems this shady character has quite effortlessly mastered both career paths. Then again, the two career profiles are not all too different from one another anyway, particularly not in Thailand.

I can read that it´s not only Thai people and news that lives in a fantasy bubble full of fairytales.
