NEXT SUNDAY'S FEATURED SPEAKER - June 1, 2003

Member Dr. Will Shultz and attorney Blair Bremberg will outline for members the pitfalls of dieing in Thailand without adequate estate preparation, and describe the 'horror story' surrounding the 'Death of a foreign national abroad' as the Thais put it.  Dr. Shultz and attorney Bremberg will offer concrete suggestions on how to avoid the potential problems of dieing in a foreign country - Thailand in particular - through proper planning. Attorney Bremberg is co-founder

of Providence Consulting Ltd., with offices in the Phyathai District of Bangkok. With a staff of three Thai lawyers they advise expat clients on business and legal issues, including asset protection planning.

With Thanks from Dave at PCEC.(from last week)

David  introduced Dr. Will Shultz and attorney Blair P. Bremberg,to tell us of the very difficult circumstances encountered when Dr.Shultz was asked to handle the final care of his good friend ColonelWalter Acker, and the

disposition of his goods in Thailand.

The Colonel was dying of Liver failure, wanted to die (his mother said),but the Thai’s were afraid of a legal action if they allowed his life support to be removed.

The Colonels’ Living Will in the United States is not recognized in Thailand.

After much effort with the hospital, and the Embassy, the tube was removed, and he passed away.

Next problem – no passport, it was in the safe at his condo, and the hotelwould not release it.  After 10 days of contacting local authorities, authorities in Bangkok, his family in the United States, the American Embassy, etc., the passport was finally released, and his body (nowembalmed and iced down) was released and a funeral was held.

Meanwhile a Death Certificate was needed .

To get it his passport had to go to local authorities, then to Bangkok where holes were drilled in it, and finally back to Pattaya, where the Death Certificate was issued, many days later. Back at the hotel, access to his safe box and his room were denied. The hotel removed the contents of his safe box for safe keeping, but would not allow access to it to

check his bank account, etc. (When we finally were able to check his account, we found approximately $13,000 had been removed by a lady friend of his.)

The story continued on, with repeated delays, refusals to allow access, etc.- the point is that YOU MUST prepare for your passing now.

:o
