In another topic -Samui/Phangan-, a poster said that there is a kind of "low-jack" built-in his laptop and once connected to the internet (after it's stolen) it will send a signal in order to locate the stolen laptop (by the police).

I never heard of that before....

Is it possible ? :D

In the meantime I received an answer from said poster, DrFisher, explaining it's a kind of tracking-software and I wrote him as follows:

" Thanks a lot DrFisher; much appreciated. :o

Never too old to learn something new I suppose.

Found "LoJack" in the meantime and I hope I'm allowed to post a link here; it might help others..."

Apple also has something like this for their Laptop's.

Just don't hope for too much if your laptop gets stolen in Thailand. One of the staff writers of the Bangkok's post database section had his one stolen, and although the tracking company immediately supplied the IP addresses each and every time the thing went on-line, it took the police ages (over a month after getting an IP address) to apply for and get court orders forcing the ISP's to give up who of their subscribers was using the IP address at the time it was tracked...

LoJack (win/Mac) seems to get all the hits from Google, but the original tracking software for OS X is called Undercover and it's here:

http://www.orbicule.com/undercover/

This software, once activated, not only traces the IP but also secretly takes pictures with the built-in webcam and sends pictures as well as screen shots back to the servers in regular intervals.

Getting Thai Police to act on this info is another matter entirely...

Acer doesn't make software like that but LoJack should work...
