How to avoid CP

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

I stopped going in 7/11 ages ago and started to use the mom and pop shops around my area, all well and good I thought. After speaking to a few of these shops it has become clear that they usually buy all their produce from Makro. Hmmm as CP basically own Makro by not going in 7/11 I am not actually avoiding CP.

There is literally nowhere else to go! To those that also would like to avoid CP, what do you do?

Much like another CP, the OCP from RoboCop, they've wrapped their tentacles around nearly everything and have become unavoidable. RoboCop was poignant, predictive social commentary.

"I'll buy that for a dollar!"

You'll likely find those same mom and pop owners at 7 buying booze and cigs most every night

Yes I don't use Amazon. Apple a bit different as there is competition in terms of just as good Android devices.

CP literally own everything, 7/11, Makro, Lotus, even small CP meat shops out here in the countryside. I would prefer not to buy things from a monopoly, that's very hard, even if you don't buy directly from a CP shop you are buying from a shop that buys from CP. So it's the principal really, I want to choose to shop somewhere not be forced to because there is no other choice.

Start raising & farming your own....Buy a chest freezer & stock up from local suppliers....

The alternatives are a lot harsher in reality than just shopping as assiduously as possible....

Other than leaving Thailand, there's no avoiding CP.

Go to wet market, get C19, game over.

Couldn't you just go to Family Mart instead ?

So CP are not overcharging you.  They are not abusing their position.  They are cheap enough for mom and pop stores to buy from and then sell on at a profit........and you avoid those mom and pop stores because they bought form CP?  Even though it works for their business??

What does it matter to you where a small local store buys from?  If they are buying from CP you will boycott them?

You have some weird messed up priorities.

remove from you list all products which you used to buy at 7/11 (it's possible, I never go to 7/11 and mom@pop shops in holidays in an emergency). They are expensive.

Switch to supermarkets and markets.

I buy at makro - the cheapest. Discounted veg and fruits often at around half price, catering size packaging. My wife use to get before covid to weekend farmers market, now not that often, higher prices, but probably higher quality. So also likes Big C (they are not the CP). So now I do makro, as I can't communicate at markers.

Thai have easier chance to buy from multiple sources - from families in the villages, from neighbours, friends. Each can be a supply chain.

There is no way for me avoiding the CP.

Probably the most important is exposing their monopoly and criticising it. A political action. Solution  will probably come by political means, through through anti monopoly laws. That has chance when thailand become more democratic

suspect the branded grocery stores have far higher hygiene, expiry and quality standards than the family shops, except for that purple-fronted food outlet horror …..

Many of the family owned village shops buy their stock from Makro

How they were able to buy all of Tesco's supermarkets and pass the equivalent of the monopolies commission I will never know......it brought them to a > 70% market share of food sold in Thailand. Ridiculous.

So what on earth is this mysterious CP which we are all supposed to be avoiding??????

Because they owned it over 20 years ago, didn't sell it all off, kept part of it--had to sell in the 97 crash...they also were importing together.

Are these Thai rules? Irrespective of past ownership (presumably under licence from Tesco) would not allow you to buy to achieve a 70% market share.

Who would not ? I don't think CP own 70% of the  market -that would mean all the other stores---Tops/Villa/Big C /Independents like Friendship etc only have a very small portion.. Big C itself  has really  been expanding for the last few years.

-------------------------------

In 2019, Big C operates 153 hypermarkets, 63 Big C markets and 1,018 Mini Big C stores

with 900,000 sq m of leasable area. Big C's sales totalled 140 billion baht in

2018 and are expected to grow by 5% this year.

Of the 6 billion baht for the domestic market, 5.5 billion baht will be used to open 5-7 new

Big C hypermarkets and 300-400 Mini Big C stores next year.

Or any local daily market for that matter.

One doesn't need to be dependent on Western-style commercial venues for your existence.

The protesters are clear that their desire for freedom of thought and expression, their future opportunities and a better balance of wealth in the country would all be better served without CP.

With no downside for the consumers, at all, so far.  Not ridiculous.

Where did you pull that "70%" from?

Seems like more than some random boycotting would be needed to reverse the disturbing global trend of consolidation...
