Fifteen people arrested in Pattaya restaurant after police raid, were allegedly drinking alcohol and violating Covid-19 rules

Pattaya – The Pattaya City Police raided a restaurant in Jomtien last night September 22nd, 2021, allegedly finding both foreign nationals and Thais drinking alcohol that police said violated the Chonburi Disease Control order to control the spread of Covid -19.

 

Additionally, under current national orders from the Center for Covid-19 Situation Administration, or CCSA, sales of alcohol in restaurants are prohibited. Bars and entertainment venues have been legally closed since April 10th, 2021, approaching six months, by CCSA mandate.

 

The raid followed police stating they received complaints from local residents in the area that foreigners and Thais were “secretly” gathering and drinking alcohol in a restaurant in Soi Jomtien 7 in Nongprue, Banglamung.

The regulations also state no more than gatherings of 20ppl - so what if they were ‘gathering’ at a friends house which also happened to be a restaurant??? 
 

Ok, they were foolish for ignoring the rules if they were at a bar, but really this rule is somewhat moronic.

 

The targeting of booze is overly puritan & hypocritical in the extreme. 
 

This place is becoming more Orwellian and almost Shariah in nature by the day…. How far are we from seeing homosexuality punished by lashes & burkas being mandatory??? 

Meanwhile, I had 13 people in my house for dinner last week…  is that ok ?? Is it only frowned upon if we had wine & beer ?

I never had you down as an apologist for law breakers.

 

 

We all know what we need to do if we find the rules too intolerable.

 

 

13 people for dinner? ......all fully vaccinated?  I think they can get you on that one under the "any activity that risks spreading Covid19"....a bit of a catch all.

I have ZERO sympathy for people who feel the need to go out to eat/drink when they can safely do it at home , they all need to be fined the maximum amount .

Thats in my opinion like/dont like dont care .

It is interesting to see how these arrests for breach focus on tourist regions, despite the fact that there are countless places selling booze (by agreement with the rtp) here in Bangkok.

 

There is, as others have said, a growing fundamental issue with alcohol in the kingdom that is not covid related, but rather covid enabled.

I also have ZERO sympathy for people who drink in bars knowing its not allowed and get caught. They risked it they got caught tough luck. 

 

Same goes for me though if I break rules and get caught then i wont moan like a lil girl on a forum how unfair it is. If you willingly break rules then you should be willing to face the consequences too. But I do understand the need to go out and have fun. Many people have the same need. I am not happy either. But if you break the rules you must accept that it can lead to problems.

 

I believe eating is not a problem as the rules allow it.

they need to follow rules, how difficult is that. If they are alcoholics which is likely as there are loads about, they can drink at home

I am also with Keith that if you go out and get caught drinking its your own fault, but i certainly do understand why some people take the risk.

I get your point... but in some cases the rules are just idiotic. 

 

Re Apologist for rule breakers: If they changed the speed limit on the express way to 40kmh I’d break that rule every day, I’d also consider it justifiable that others do the same. 

I know this is an extremely poor example and cannot ‘transfer over’ to discussion involving a global pandemic. 

 

However when the regulation is broken down it seems a little daft. 

- Its ok for 13 people to sit in a restaurant, eat and drink water

- its not ok for 13 people to sit in a restaurant, eat and drink beer

 

It is the alcohol which is being targeted. I understand why, peoples inhibitions lower when inebriated. 

But, if the risk is that high - keep the restaurants closed. 

 

The idea that restaurants can open but not serve alcohol is a half measure, it's an easy target which shows those in positions of decision making power are trying to do something, but really, the hypocrisy is daft.

The regulations for Bangkok state no gatherings of more than 20 people.

 

 

My point is with the manner in which these regulations are being handled - its the faux-outrage which these situations are being dealt with and reported on...  Its as if Alcohol is some illicit substances which shows the poor moral character of these law-breakers who deserve punishment.... 

 

.... its the ’tone’ of each and every one of such similar reports that I read which highlight how ‘when alcohol’ is involved those ‘consuming’ are portrayed in a despicable manner which is then mirrored by some on this forum...  inevitably the phrase ‘alcoholic’  comes up.

In the past 3 weeks I’ve only had two meals (at home or out) where I could not get a beer with my dinner. 

 

(nearly) Every restaurant is serving beer with the ’theatre’ of masking the beer in a coconut or in mug...  yet when a restaurant is reported to be serving beer its done so in a manner of far greater gravitas than the harmless non-event it really is.

Sounds as though you and your friends were contravening the Covid-related restrictions on "gatherings" if the guests didn't all normally live there with you, regardless of the alcohol presence. 

 

The restrictions apply regardless of vaccination status, being vaccinated doesn't prevent the vaccinated from infecting others or contracting the virus.

You have zero sympathy for people who go out and support local businesses by eating in their restaurant ?

 

Restaurants are now open. The government has made the decision that its ok to go to a shopping mall, its ok to to a restaurant etc....   

 

The only difference is one cannot have a beer with dinner (officially). 

 

In your zero sympathy world - Is punishable office of having a beer with a burger in a restaurant any less safe than having a glass of water with a burger in a restaurant ???

Food doesn't contain alcohol.

 

Drinking alcohol with food has never been mandatory.

 

Neither has drinking alcohol while shopping at the mall.

 

Water doesn't contain alcohol.

 

There are alcohol-free beers.
