My FireFox 2.0.0.4 is playing with me. FireFox hangs every 2-3 minutes, freezes, and processor load goes high for about 10 seconds. Then I can use the browser again. I have deleted all FireFox plugins/add-ons, because I thought one of them was the problem.

Help, please!

While i realise i am not answering your question directly..

A lot of people are having this issue apparently.

I had it with the 2 previous versions as well (though not as frequently but enough to be annoying)

I like the Open Source ideal...i use Open Office and dual boot Ubuntu/2000 on one machine and Mandrake/XP on another, but I really think Firefox is broken.

I switched to Opera and am really happy with it...

Another Opera fan. I switched months ago. It's always been lighting fast -- something to do with the way the cache is set up. And with the new speed dial in the latest version, it's great. Customization is a breeze as well.

It may be the websites you are viewing?

I had to give up on Firefox with my XP machines as it would use all processor cycles and hang entire machine. Have not had a problem with Vista machine, yet.

But believe the cause of my previous hangups was, mostly, the Thai Immigration web site - for some reason if I allowed that to be in an open window for any time period Firefox would take 100% and lock computer up. Without that site open it did not seem to lock up. Don't know if it might be java/active x or something else.

I am running FF 2.0.0.3 under XP Home with no problems.

Perhaps you should go back one level?

I only got my update to .4 today and then I read this....

If you do go-back then remember to unselect auto-update.

I reinstalled my java plugins and this stopped.

That's interesting, I got a message telling me my java console was incompatible with .4

Give it a few days. Those little annoyances often get weeded out with nightly builds.

I received the same message yesterday when Firefox automatically updated itself. There doesn't seem to be any problems though.

Maybe I missed this on the earlier version, but I've now got an on-line spelling checker - in British English! Great for replying on TV :o

Same here. Thought the problem was with Flash, but as a test I ran the website that was giving me problems (in IE), and got an error message which pointed to Java.

Deleted and re-installed, and now no problems.

I have just downloaded 2.0.0.4 and installed it.

Despite using the British version I cannot get the right (:D) spelling to work

Perhaps Geoff in Phuket can say what he did.

The spelling checker takes it configuration for locale settings. Forgive me I can't recall which, tehre are several locale 'tables' within XP.. Since you're in Malaysia so not sure what you settings are, but here, if the OS was originally configured as say 'Thai' with US English {common on slipstreamed installs}, then the dictionary will default to US.

However if your machine was a British English build then FF will default to British English. A workaround is to install an add-on British English Dictionary Dictionary page for Firefox

Thanks.

Changing the locale in the Control panel is not an option as I have a US keyboard.

If I change to UK the keyboard gets messed up....... :o

I have already downloaded and installed the British dictionary that you indicated but it does not seem to work.

Any further suggestions will be most welcome.

You're welcome, however, I've just tried my dictionary which was working and now it doesn't detect or give the British option for colour or centre.

Unfortunately all my systems are updated to .4 so I can't confirm my suspicion that .4 is the culprit.

I'll send a flag to FF.

PS From Firefox Site:-

If the update system doesn't respond for you, you'll have to download FF 2.0.0.4 from Firefox's home page. In any case, that'll be quickly replaced by the 2.0.0.5 version (which is 2.0.0.4 with two bug fixes).

Spell Checker for color and center :o

OK Missed this, sorry. when on an in-line edit field, like this one,

Right Click -> Beneath [Spell Check This field] you should see [Languages] ->For some reason I'd been reset to US English, simply click on English/United kingdom and everything should be fine.

And it's colour and

Here we go.

Colour, Centre.

Magic

Now how do I make that permanent.

In Tools/Advanced/Languages I only have British English listed,

but I still get the US version on the Right Click that you suggested.

Thanks

but I still get the US version on the Right Click that you suggested. No UK English on edit {Right Click} menu?

Thanks

Dictionary setting on Edit Menu

Tools -> Options ->Advanced -> Languages are for page display cascade, i.e. First US English, then Thai, or say Malay
