Bangkok, 15 November, 2021 – Thailand has won the ‘Recommended Travel Destination of the Year’ award at the 2021 City Travel Hotel Awards organised by the Chinese magazine City Travel.

 

Thailand was the only outbound tourist destination receiving the award at the presentation ceremony, which took place on 10 November, 2021, at the Hyatt Regency Shanghai Global Harbour in Shanghai.

 

Mr. Lertchai Wangtrakuldi, Director of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Shanghai Office, said, “This coveted accolade shows that Thailand continues to hold enormous appeal for Chinese travellers. And, with Thailand having further reopened to tourism at the beginning of November, now is the time to be promoting the destination in the major source market that is China.”

 

China is among the 63 approved countries and territories from where travellers can visit Thailand under quarantine-free entry requirements introduced on 1 November, 2021.

 

City Travel magazine, with a monthly circulation of 200,000 copies, is read by Chinese tourists for the accommodation, dining, sightseeing, and other information it features on various international destinations.

Another misleading statements - 'quarantine free'? It is certainly NOT quarantine free, it is quarantine 1 day plus you must have Covid test and expensive health insurance. That will put many genuine tourists off.

Gosh, I get goose bumps when TAT talks like this.

A couple of years from now the headline will be :

 

Chinese travellers name Thailand their ‘Recommended Annexation of The Year '

Give yourselves a pat on the back for a job well done.

Bravo

And as soon as Thailand got out of earshot, China whipped out another cheap paper award saying "Cambodia their ‘Recommended Travel Destination of the Year’" and so on and so on.

Funny this, cos Vietnam recently got a similar award.

This must be the first time in global history that a destination has 'won' travel recommendation destination of the year from a country that haven't and will not send any tourists in the same year.

Won by default and setting up the future of "approved" travel destinations. 

Because it would not be acceptable to mention the other top international vacation spots pre-pandemic. Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong.

My first trip to China was about 30 years ago.  Very few "cute" ones then.  But seems times have changed! LOL

Since the Chinese got into foreign tourism in a big way (1) they have been the largest group of foreign tourists in Thailand (2) Thailand has been their top destination by a long way, followed by Japan surprisingly given the mutual hostility (shades of England and France perhaps).

 

Thai culture and ethnicity has a lot more in common with Chinese than with persons of European descent of course, but the average farang doen't like to be reminded of that.

They market Thailand heavily in China.  Those "zero cost" tours were very popular.  I did one while in China for a one day domestic tour.  Never again!  Spent have the time in trinket shops!!!!  Horrible.

That's a bit like me saying that my preferred destination would be the moon.

 

For the average Chinese traveler, Thailand is just as unreachable right now - thanks to China's ongoing zero Covid policy and very strict quarantine protocols for returnees.

Timely accolade and argurs well for the future of the tourism industry which is dire. Tourism is a big contributor to the current account surplus in the past and will bolster the Baht strength and stability.

They should start a "poll" of which country is the "least desired one" 

 

Probably China would win everywhere.
