No, free medical is just one reason I live in OZ I have many reasons to live here to many to mention. As I mentioned before in another tread I still have holidays twice a year in LOS free accommodation since I still have my own place there

At 77 years of age, why are you imprisoning yourself in Australia?

All these "reasons" you mention, what good is it when you could be living where you holiday????

Strange.

You could be living in Thailand with the family.

When that day comes, as it will come for all of us, you could be surrounded by family, in a place you like so much that you holiday there.

Obviously, you are not posting the real reason why you are living in Australia rather than living in Thailand.

One day you will pop off in Australia.  Is it really worth it for what your Thai missus earns working in Australia????

Why imprison yourself because of her salary in Australia?  You are 77, not 47.  Think about it.

You think about it if I move to LOS again I will loose most of my pension I will have the hassle of renewing visas, 90 day reports and so on I don't need that here neither my wife who got Australian citizenship. Another thing is I don't like Thai food so it would cost me a fortune on western food . I don't have to deposit money for visas, going anywhere in LOS I get double priced, But as you said it is up to you.

How so?

Doesn't seem to be a problem for hundreds of thousands of expat retirees, from all around the world, living in Thailand.

I'm in Pattaya.  Plenty of western food on offer, and for cheap.

I have never, and will never, deposit 800k baht into a 3rd World Country where I have no rights.  I use an agent.  Also cheap.

Not "anywhere" just certain places.

Your argument falls down in many examples.  I could understand if you had a medical condition that requires constant treatment, but if not, you could easily chose to live out your twilight years in a place where you holiday to.  The step is not that big, and a holiday budget is not the same as living in Thailand full time.

Are you saying that if those problems were not there you'd choose Thailand?

As I said I am 77 now and might need a wheelchair in the future ask any handicapped person how they get treated in Thailand.

To be honest, if that's all you've got to "survive" on per month, you're better off in Australia at your age.

Just to clarify, you are 77 years of age, have no saving and no assets, and live hand to mouth every fortnight.  Is this correct?  If so, how do you afford the return airfares over to Thailand, twice a year?

Just curious to compare Australia with the UK. My mother is in the equivalent situation as you. Government pays her rent, local taxes and she ends up with 1900 AUD a month.

Utilities cost her 400 AUD

She is left with 1500AUD a month for food, her car and discretionary spending.

With Lidl, Primark etc very easy to live on that.

How does her 1500 compare to you? And in the UK people talk nonsense about heat or eat. She has plenty. Is there the same whining there?

Why don't you leave the man alone and mind your own business?

His lifestyle choices  have nothing to do with you!

The member has three threads running on the first page of this forum.

The member has volunteered information on his "life style choices" right down to posting his fortnightly financials.

Obviously, he has no problem discussing them, so why do you????

Feel free to put me on ignore and allow others to post freely without your off topic and trolling posts.

Your input will not be missed.

Now, how about those expensive Aussie passports?

Or, will you say, it's up to the Australian government and none of your business?   :cheesy:

What have you contributed?

As I said to another member, he volunteers the information, including his financials.

Do you have a comment to make about his circumstances?

For someone who ONLY has the pension to live on, are they better off, financially and life style wise, to be living in Australia, or Thailand?

Hmmm.

This thread should have the attention of most Australians as it takes place in their own backyard.

While some have commented one of the most notable, knowledgeable and highly educated Australian posters @Lacessit is nowhere to be found.

Of all threads on the forum I would expect to see him posting his expertise on this important Australian topic.

He certainly doesn’t hold back posting his expertise on the problems of America on the American threads.

I don't smoke, but it's been all over the news back in Australia about the boom in illegally imported tobacco.  It's boomed because it's now around $50 a packet, where a grey import is around $25.

Perhaps the day will come where we will start to see people selling home brewed beer, particularly as alcohol in Australia is taxed twice a year.

Even the Chief Health Office recognizes the link between taxes making a product unaffordable, and he growth in illegally imported products.

Maybe alcohol will go the same way as tobacco as it become less affordable over time.

Perhaps Australians will have to start buying illegally distilled Lao Khao in the future.  :cheesy:

As I posted before he is defrauding the federal government and Centrelink and leeching off our taxes. It won't be difficult for Centrelink to figure out who is he - stupidity posting on public forums he is 77 old and married to a Thai 21 years, flying to Thailand twice per year, won't be difficult to triage. Many govt departments are starting to do data mining of publicly available info, that includes forums and Facebook.

Interesting article.

Paul Keating commented in 1986 that Australia risked becoming a Banana Republic.  It seems we are already there.

https://www.innovationaus.com/in-2019-were-a-banana-republic/

This sums it up pretty well:  “Australia is devolving quite rapidly now from a developed economy to a developing economy.”

The problem is the government started importing lots of people from the subcontinent but the pie is not getting bigger. This year the Sumandou iron ore is expected to hit the market and drive the prices down. There is also upcoming LNG oversupply. I would expect higher budget deficit and lower Aussie dollar. If the dollar goes sub 20 baht there will be some pain felt in Thailand.
