The 66 year old owner of a herd of 18 buffaloes had noticed one missing after letting them graze behind a resort.

Missing was three year old "Jao San" or "Shorty".

She was a 500-600 kilo beast pregnant for eight months.

Ten rescuers set up a winch and managed to haul the buffalo out after a two hour operation.

Shorty was tired and unfortunately appeared to have suffered a broken neck. A vet was being consulted to confirm this.
