I am looking for a dedicated Hobby Shop in CM that carries all the plastic models of cars, planes and ships with the accessories to assemble them.

Anyone know of one?

Any leads would be most appreciated.

exactly what i was looking for first time i came to chiang mai. nothing that i know off. the closest would be Central toys dept at Kad Suan Keaw. That too very limited models. Looking for a shop where I could get airbrush etc etc preferably in Chiang Mai. Anyone? Love classic airplanes.

Many thanks Austhiaed, on my way on Monday. Tigerbeer might be seeing them as well.

No worries. Keep me posted on how you get on. I take my son to watch the miniature remote planes that fly in the afternoons behind the powerhouse gym on Nimmenhemmin Rd. Could be the same bloke that runs the hobby shop.

Aust, does he specialise in remote control items ? cause it would be totally different thing i would be looking for and am sure ProThaiExpat might feel the same. Most of these shops carry remote control toys such as airplanes, cars and not plastic modeling kits. These items are hard to find in chiang mai but really hope you got us a lead :o

prothaiexpat, do let me know what they have :D

If not then I'm sure that guy will point you in the right direction.

there is one on suthep road, near wat suandok. if you are going towards doi suthep it's one the left handside after the petrol station before the 7/11.

i've never been inside, but I saw some sort of model aeroplanes when I walked past.

Now I know what it feels like to be a "stalking horse". Anyway, went to three "model shops" today, including a very excellent one at Central Department Store that you pass through on your way to the stationary supples. Wings, one near wings and the one on rajawitti road.

If you are looking for model airplanes, especially ones driven by motors and cars, trucks and other wheeled vehicles driven by remote, you will find many options at the locations mentioned in this thread so far.

What you will not find is plastic model sailing ships, my particular interest. Yes, they have war ships of all types, but these are large piece models of little challenge to me.

I will check on the shop on the way to Doi Suthep tomorrow but I now reside in the mental state of "Ye of such little hope". (sic)

I have learned in my travels today that clearly the model market in Thailand is driven by youngsters, as it should be, and there is little hope, especially in Chiang Mai, that I will find my "tall ship models".

Fortunately, such models made of plastic do not weigh much and I have a couple on the way Priority International Air Mail from Australia.

The model vise with the two arms with pelican clamps and a third arm with a magnifying glass and weighted base will have to be ordered from the U.S. Central Department Store has a good selection of paints, glues and tools, mostly from Japan and therefore quite expensively priced. Will probably order every thing but glue and paint from the U.S., when I order the x-acto model vise.

If you don't hear from me further, you may assume that the shop on the way to Doe Suthep is merchandised in the same manner as those visited today.

Cheers, all.

ProThaiExpat,

thats the same problem i have. nothing really available in chiang mai. Paints etc at central are way overpriced and very limited. Things like clamps with magnifying lens and things like that can be found at Amorn just outside of IKON plaza near Kad Suan Keaw. Airbrush with Compressor is also available from art supply shops for eg: b2s. Or use airbrush with CO2. :o

i had however found a couple websites with what you are looking for with shops in bangkok. give me a couple days and i would pm you what i find. Italeri, airfix, Tamiya, Hasegawa just some of the brands that are definately available in thailand. but at the moment someone who is already doing this is gonna read this thread and give some more leads. let me know if you find anything at suthep road.

Thanks TB, will add Amorn outside of Icon to my trip tomorrow.

It will be interesting to see the prices of "tall ship models" in Bkk stores or online from Thai suppliers. Import duty is difficult to escape. My only hope is to get it through the mail from overseas when I escape duty in most cases.

Shipping by International Priority Air Mail and insurance added to prices can get expensive, even when you find an online vendor that will ship overseas.

TB: It is comforting to hear from someone who knows of what I speak and can even name the manufacturers by name.

Not so. Amorn, in Icon next to Computer Plaza or at Lotus Khamtieng have at least two different model vices in stock, along with other model making equipment..

For things like acrylic paints, balsa, flock / static grass etc, the best place is Udompon (the bigs arts and book shop) just towards the moat from the UN Irish Pub on Ratwithi Road (and on same side opposite the pizza slice place).

All their paints and stuff are on the top floor - go in the front door at the corner of the building and turn right up the stairs and keep going up to the top - there's a huge section at what would be the back right hand corner as you came in the front door. They also have good stocks of modelling tools, brushes etc, both on the top and middle (stationary) floor.

Never found a model shop in Chiangmai selling smaller than 1:48 scale (tall ships are usually at least 1:300 or 600 for plastic kits) whether it be ships, vehicles, figures, or "active toys" such as scalectrix or model railways. The shop on Ratwithi next to Yupparat school is not a shop, it's a shop window of an accountant's office displaying his collection of collectable action figures etc. He's actually got a few very nice rarities in there and it's worth a 5-10 minute drool if you're into such things (I'm not - it's not model-making to me). If he ever puts that collection onto eBay piece-by-piece, he'll make a fortune.

The "model" shops on Charoenprathet and down past the Alliance Francais are RC model bits and spares shops - no good for plastic or metal model makers - I believe the one on Suthep Road is the same.

There used to be a very good 1:72 and smaller plastic kits shop upstairs in Kad Suan Kaew in the little micro-stalls market type area - they had wide stocks of Airfix, Revell, Tamiya (including Tamiya acrylics) etc. But I've not been able to find it for the last couple of years, so it's either moved or closed. Maybe they found they could make more moner selling plastics for mobile phones or the type of skimpy clothing that gets banned every Songkran?

For a couple of years now I've been thinking of opening a model / arts / crafts shop - just need to make the start-up money first :D After nearly 25 years (part time) in the military models trade, and being a model designer, it's always been a dream of mine - ah well, I can dream :o
