Unexpected Cars

Recommended Posts

I am not sure if this qualifies as an unexpected car but I saw it near Khampaeng Phet a couple of weeks ago.

Sorry about the quality but it is the phone on my camera.

Did it have the 440 six pack or a 426 Hemi. :)

I suspect that in its day it was a real head turner and with a couple of bottles of Kurust, some welding here and there and a lick or 2 of paint it would become a goer once again, (or not as the case may be). :P;)

Ah if only I had the brains to go with my handsome looks I would be a happy man.

I should have said the camera on my phone indeedly. Sorry for the brain dump. :wai:

Saturday evening at the InterContinental Hua Hin:

Mercedes SLS - sold, 24 million THB (sticker 25 million so 1 million knocked off for a former PM :P )

Mercedes '55 (IIRC) 300SL ("gull-wing") - fully restored, 6-year restoration by a German gent.

New Porsche Cayenne Diesel (full RUF kit) - VERY quiet diesel engine. Torque = insane. Closed-road testing on Sunday morning (too hungover). Interior didn't strike me as so "Porsche" anymore IMO (also I'm not sure if it's going to run properly on Thailand's sub-Euro III-spec diesel....... but the buyers of these types of cars I suspect don't really care much....)

Ferrari 599 - omg. BEAUTIFUL - black....

Porsche RUF GT2 - kitted out, I couldn't even tell if it was a GT2....

Ferrari F420 Scuderia - niiiiceee.....

Maserati Granturismo - I don't know if it was an "S" or not, I'm not that well-read on the Maseratis, still she was a beauty.

Range Rover L322 Sport Supercharged - the others were amazing, but the RR just fits my personality more, IMO.

That was just at the InterContinental

Also got to check out a Porsche 997 - jesus. power much???? And then a Porsche Carerra 4s - wow..... IIRC you can order the drop-top version of the 997 for an mere 3 million baht extra........

Other houses I got to see 2 Cayenne S's (one family), one Cayman, 2 of the new Merc E-coupes, one of the new E-cabriolets, an X6 and X5 4.6is (one family - I'd never even seen a 4.6is in Thailand thus far), among many many many other cars - too many to mention, these are just off the top of my head of the stunners that caught my eye.

I know I said I wold snap some photos - but you kind of don't do that when you're allowed access to these vehicles. Great memories though - I hope I never forget....

Oh and there is an Enzo Ferrari Enzo in Bangkok. I've never driven it (actually I've never even driven one, period). But I will get my hands on it one way or another.... this I swear. And I will have no shame when it comes to taking pics/videos.......

My 2 favorites were the Merc SLS and the Ferrari 599...... But I still like drop-top anything.

Saw an older Ford Maverick today and actually that's the second one but I was heading somewhere and didn't have time to stop and take a picture..

If your talking about the UK Ford Maverick 4x4, yes have seen one, but there are lots of it Sister Nissan running around.

Also seen here a Ford Granada Estate, of about the same year.

If your talking about USA Ford Maverick have seen a red LHD one here.

DM - short answer is "friends." - I surely don't have the cash to be throwing at 10-20+ million THB cars! Every high-dollar/baht car I've driven has been somebody else's car....I guess that makes me some kind of car mooch.... :P

Blackberry - nice video! A couple of posts back I mentioned the 2nd Stage ChaengWattana Expressway as the place to drive fast in BKK... I assume you took that video right after the Prachacheun tollbooth? Once you get past Muang Thong Thani, then it's 250kph+ all of the way until Bang Pa-In (with 2 places where you need to lay on the brakes unless you want to leave some metal on the road....).

Just make a u-turn after paying the last toll and do the same thing on the way into BKK (again, watch out for the 2 spots where you can bottom-out at speed). You will have about 1000 dead bugs on your windscreen/bumpers because the end-section is not elevated, but it's less scary than speeding down the super-elevated BangNa-Chonburi tollway (EvilDrSomkid-style).

That's the only stretch of road in Thailand that I've been pulled over on once I reached the toll booth and it cost me a hefty 500b (in Thai fine terms) and had my license confiscated until fine paid.. I was going only about 140 when the speed limit was 120 too I might add, can't imagine doing 250+KPH though it is tempting but I also never have a chance without my family on board..

Need to see this video.

I still need to check out this 2nd stage Chaeng Wattana Expressway. Maybe next month when I'm home. Upgrading the handling is on the agenda:

-Bilstein B6 shocks. Ordered.

-OZ Ultraleggeras (17x8) w/ 245/40/ZR17s. Ordered.

EvilDrSomkid speeds are ONLY driven on roads with plenty of space. BTW, I have not gone above 200 yet on the BangNa-Chonburi, but on the Uttarapimuk. The one above Vibhavadi-Rangsit. That was 240 on the gauge. Pretty much top speed for the S6 in stock condition. Its a 15 year old car. I have not hit redline yet (7000).

I have briefly touched 200 on the gauge with an Altis 1.8 on the BangNa-Chonburi. That happened when I was trying, pathetically, to chase an M3.

This was 2 years ago.

I think I could keep up with an older M3 now with the S6.

Back on topic, I do keep my eyes peeled for unusual cars.

jcon, I seem to remember seeing some long distance spyshot on the mentioned Enzo here on TV.

I can't even image what that would cost in Thailand... A gazillion or so?

In Wang Nam Yen last Friday - south Sa Kaeo province on way to Chanthaburi, saw this Volvo.

Unsure of model/year?

Had just said 'don't see many Volvos here" when 4 spaces behind another one was parked, a less interesting one from 80s.

That Prachacheun toll where Blackberry spotted the Murcielagos/Gallardos is where everybody pumps the adrenaline for the rest of the journey (no tolls to pay until Bang Pa-In). I've told EvilDrSomkid before, I used to do that run often, but now I'm a bit too old/scared.... WarpSpeed where did you get your ticket? Coming inbound?

That Ferrari you were referring to, EvilDrSomkid, I think the consensus was that it was an F430 Scuderia, not an Enzo Ferrari Enzo. It's still there, in the Icon III parking lot on Thonglor. As for the cost of an Enzo here - A LOT :P

Also, there is at least one Merc SLR McLaren 722 Roadster in BKK. I don't know the retail price, but I'm sure it's very frightening.

There is a TV member with a Diablo - can't recall if it's in Malaysia or in Thailand. There was a thread some time ago and some people brought out their big toys to show (helicopters, planes, cars, etc.).

edit: genghis61, I'm no Volvo expert, but I don't think the front end of that one you posted in #297 is the original. I wonder what the original front end looked like and how it came to be how it is now?

If inbound means heading towards Bangkok then yes.. But I have no idea where they actually clocked me as I was pulled over leaving the toll both by an officer on foot like may others. I'm pretty sure they used the overhead CCTV to clock me so it's a crap shoot as to whether or not they are running a sting on a given day... If they use the overhead CCTV which they have on all Xways they can just put down stripes or some other obscure fixed marker at a given distance and then time you between those markers to tell if you're speeding. X legal speed should take X length of time from point A to point B anything over is speeding and of course can be determined mathematically how fast which is very often done by the software and not humans so much quicker and accurate. There's no way to tell they are doing it and no way to defend against it either..

True it seems it has been made to look like a Rolls.. But as for not too many Volvos here I've seen dozens of several different models..

That just reminded me that I saw a Geely (Chinese Rolls Royce "look-alike") a couple of time recently, near Huay Yai.

IF its a Volvo, its an Amazone 4 door, front modified from frontwheels and foreward.

Plenty of Volvo in LOS, been made here for more than a decade and still make them here
