mahtin Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 Wife's sister visiting with her UK husband. She has Thai passport, he has UK. He wants to stay 3 or 4 days longer than the 30 days he got on arrival. Told him he can just pay the fine at immigration at the airport when checking in for flight. Now 500 Baht a day? Read somewhere this is equivalent to surrendering and not a problem, but if caught in a street check it is breaking the law. This could be serious. He is worried. Any reassurance possible? Thanks.
ubonjoe Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 He got a 30 day visa exempt entry not a 15 day visa on arrival that requires a 2000 fee be paid for it. He could apply for a 30 day extension at immigration for a fee of 1900 baht. The overstay fine is 500 baht a day and is paid when clearing departure immigration. If caught with a overstay he could be taken to the Immigration Detention Center and the be deported with a 1 year ban from entering the country. 2
DrJack54 Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 (edited) Pay 1900 baht and obtain 30 day extension is his best option imo. Which immigration office? Edited March 5, 2022 by DrJack54 1
mahtin Posted March 5, 2022 Author Posted March 5, 2022 OK thanks Joe and Doc. Can he obtain this extension at Khon Kaen Immigration office on Monday - delay?

Isn't it a five year ban if arrested while on overstay? My understanding is that, although not advisable, Western foreigners are unlikely to be arrested on a short overstay (though there is a small chance of someone angling for a bribe). You will just be told to arrange an immediate departure from Thailand.

aussiexpat Posted March 5, 2022 Posted March 5, 2022 As already said, simple to get a 30 day extension. Here are the overstay penalties

Lots of people have, it’s not so likely going to an airport, but in the days of land border crossings, police stopping busses and checking all foreign passengers passports was not uncommon.
