Thai government to keep diesel no higher than ฿30 per litre for as long as possible

The Thai government has promised to do its best to keep the price of diesel at no more than 30 baht/litre for as long as possible, said a tired-looking Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha at the Government House, after chairing a meeting of the National Energy Policy Committee Wednesday afternoon.

 

Prayut said there are also benzene and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), the prices of which the government will try to manage, including the use of tax measures and the Oil Fund, in a way which will have the least impact on people, as global oil prices rise steadily due to the war in Ukraine.

 

According to Reuters today, Brent crude was down $3.56, or 2.8%, to $124.42 a barrel, after earlier rising above $131.  On Monday, however, Brent hit $139, its highest since 2008.

Same here.........Just driven around town (which takes 5 minutes).....cheapest is 31.5 baht.

Obviously you believe that equates to a similar percentage rise as seen in the price of oil.

When they had the diesel price cap in previous years it was never exactly 30 baht, but then whinging has become a way of life for many on here.

No not at all and I'll admit fuel, for me is cheap here, but when the Govt say they'll peg diesel at 30bht when it is already above that figure I'll call fail.

When the average price of diesel in the world for this period is about 65-70 B, I learn to be grateful that diesel here is still around 30 B. A rare decision making that I agree.

He averted a labor/economic disaster last month with truckers poised to shutdown the country, by promising to keep the price at/below 30/l until 31 March 2022.

 

Obviously he wasn't aware of the pending Ukraine invasion and resulting pressures on oil markets.

 

 

Eventually prayut is going to say enough, and retire to the privy council.

I got the Mrs to fill mine up earlier (diesel)... it was 34.2baht/l, for Fuel Save at Shell.....Hwy 36 Banglamung.

BTW between 31 and 34.5 where I live....the locals aren't enjoying it at all.

No, I mean the mentality that believes that things should work the same way in Thailand as it does where they came from. Different country, different culture, learn to live with it.

BTW, they will enjoy it a lot less when the government can no longer afford a subsidy.

 

Thailand draws from its State Oil Fund to subsidize the public. The fund is expected to raise a loan of 30 billion baht in April. Even then, Supattanapong Punmeechaow, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Minister, said, "If global oil prices continue to surge, the fund could dry up and the government may have to consider other options, including seeking more loans to support the scheme."
