Police in Sateuk, Buriram, NE Thailand were called after a man reported that his million baht elephant had been stolen.

It was soon fairly obvious who had done this as a man called Bank, 30, had the pachyderm on a chain at his house.

He told police that he had taken Mario, 13, the elephant, from his brother Khwanchai because he wanted to hold him as collateral, reported Thai Rath.

He wanted the elephant sold and the money split between the three siblings. He claimed Mario was a "living family heirloom".

At this point police began to query these claims, indeed they suspected amphetamines.

This was confirmed by two things.

Firstly the testimony of the elder brother who said that Bank had had his elephant.

His mum had bought him one too for 900,000 baht but he'd given it to his wife after they split up. He said his younger sibling was hopeless at looking after elephants.

Instead Bank turned to yaba use and pestering his mother for money.

Police said that Bank tested positive for drugs as Mario was taken home.
