BANGKOK, May 17 (TNA) – Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha is pleased with Thai-German collaboration to implement the Thai Rice NAMA project to fight global warming, according to the government spokesman.

Government spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said Gen Prayut supported Thai Rice Nama, a project to increase the productivity of paddy fields, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and promote the sustainability of rice cultivation.

According to the spokesman, the Thai Rice NAMA project results from cooperation between the Thai government sector and the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) and enjoys financial support from NAMA Facility. It is aimed at replacing Thailand's conventional rice cultivation which gives off as much as 55% of greenhouse gas emissions in the Thai agricultural sector.

Rice gives off gas.  That's news to me. The only gas emission I see comes from the iron buffaloes used to till the soil, and then the pump engines for the watering of the fields.  Guess I need to some

Generally speaking he is the PM but formerly a General, well in reality.  One never looses the title unless its removed.

And here I thought it was cow farts, is it just rice or is it everything we grow or meat we eat? Also does America have anything to do with these new brain farts?

From what i gather it's mostly about LLL laser land leveling with machinery when fields are dry.

Replacing water puddling to level fields to be more efficient.

The main percentage of gas emissions in a crop come from fertilizer.

Almost right.

Rotting underwater vegetation is the major contributor to the release of methane. Laser levelling helps by reducing the amount of water required for the crop.

Along with the buffaloes - the humans (after Som Tum and Chang)????

Surprisingly I found this on the internet:

I thought rice plants absorb carbon dioxide, not emit it.

Thai researchers track greenhouse gases from rice field

A training on measuring greenhouse gas emission from paddy fields was organized for the first time in Prachin Buri province, central Thailand, by the Rice Department in collaboration with the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) and Germany’s main international cooperation agency, the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH to set up a  high quality greenhouse gas emission database.

Lip Service!!!

If he was really interested  in emissions ,global warming and the Environment he would have done something about the burning off in Chiang Mai every year, which must be causing lung problems to a great number of people in the region, maybe A.Nut in Bangkok should be getting his health department to look at that, instead of pi**ing around with mask mandates.

Another Laugh a minute … Global Warming indeed … when will it be announced that everybody will be given a new electric car “;0)

Ahem... Is he really worthy of any of these two titles?

They do all this then screw up everything with field burning.

Same as the UK Services, a lot of those old farts think they still have the rank, had a barrack warden in the RAF, still wanted to be known as Captain..

Same with police.

Thaksin was still referred to as Capt. Thaksin well after he entered politics and well after he was convicted.

The capt. title did disappear when it was officially removed.

Plenty of other examples world wide. US presidents, after they finish their term are still addressed as president until they die.

I don't know what you have against America, you might want to clear your own brain farts first, growing plants obviously doesn't produce greenhouse gases.

Rice cultivation includes burning the fields after harvest, which is accounting for 50-55% of Thailand's pollution - far and above industry and car emissions. You'll notice CM has among the worst air pollution in the world for some times of the year, for this very reason.

Yep. This is the problem. You can plough the fields after harvest but this can result in damage to the plough disk. Farmers have to pay for any damage. Burning is pretty well free. Rice prices per kilo for the farmers has not been good, 'Powder' for the rice has gone up so pretty well cost of growing to returns are marginal at best or negative. Burning will continue. Effective and cheap.

Actually, as I learned in high school biology class, plants actually do emit CO2, mostly at night. But on balance, they consume more than they produce.

Anyway, CO2 isn't the only greenhouse gas. Methane is actually a far more potent greenhouse gas, and as Muhendis noted above, "Rotting underwater vegetation is the major contributor to the release of methane."
