Tourist visa return ticket

For a tourist visa approval need a return ticket proof, does it need to be airplane or can it be train or bus ticket outside the country? Thank you.

I don't think most embassies or official consulates will accept anything other than a ticket for a flight out of the country.

Some nearby embassies and consulates would probably accept a ticket for travel overland.
