sanuk711 Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 Super gonorrhoea poses a 'major global threat', scientists have warned in the wake of an Austrian man catching a drug-resistant version of the STI The unidentified man, in his 50s, became infected after having unprotected sex with a prostitute while on holiday in Cambodia in April. Gonorrhoea has been gathering resistance to a number of antibiotics over the past few decades, a phenomena called antimicrobial resistance. British doctors used to prescribe the antibiotic ciprofloxacin. But in 2005 it was no longer recommended as a treatment because the bacteria had become resistant. Another antibiotic — cefixime — was also dropped in 2011 for the same reason. This new strain is also resistant to other antibiotics used to fight infections cefotaxime, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline, And displayed resistance to azithromycin, one of the frontline antibiotics used to treat gonorrhoea in Europe. Antimicrobial resistance is increasingly concerning to scientists and health leaders. Earlier this year a major study found superbugs had directly killed 1.2million people in 2019. This makes superbugs a bigger global killer than AIDS or malaria Over-prescribing and the inappropriate doling out of antibiotics has been attributed as one reason behind the rise of superbugs. ***The man was eventually treated with a week-long course of amoxicillin-clavulanic acid, a combination antibiotic treatment. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-10941755/Austrian-man-catches-Super-gonorrhoea-Cambodian-prostitute.html

internationalism Posted June 23, 2022 Posted June 23, 2022 as he was fully treated with amoxicilin means this bacteria is not drug resistant. It's a matter of finding a proper antibiotic. Doctors can also combine 2 or more antibiotics at the same time. Memorable holiday in cambodia for him, his wify and kids will also remember well 2
Popular Post spidermike007 Posted June 23, 2022 Popular Post Posted June 23, 2022 Now that Covid is waning, the experts would be absolutely lost, if they did not have a new disease they could warn us about. And it seems as if a portion of the population would also be lost without something to be panicked over. It is all quite sad and not exactly humanity showing it's better nature. Don't we have better things to do, than freak out over the next big plague type event? 5 2
Popular Post Gaccha Posted June 23, 2022 Popular Post Posted June 23, 2022 This article has a level of misinformation that I didn't think was possible. It claims a Superbug infection and then describes how it was treated with a now pretty routine drug combination. For something to be a Superbug it has to be resistant to the drugs of last resort. Famously, one strain that made the newspapers was MRSA, named because way back then M (methicilin) was the drug of last resort. The R stands for resistant. The article mentions the routine drug Azithromoycin as if it is cutting edge. This is silly. It has been around for 30+ years as normal prescription. Bugs are always evolving and will always supplant the latest drugs. The problem is indeed overuse but the much more serious problem is the lack of funding in new antibiotics because there is no profit in it. A drug of last resort can only be administered by hospitals and are strictly controlled. Only a tiny number of Superbug outbreak cases occur each year and this wasn't one of them. 4

Been in Asia 12 years, banged loads of ladies (Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines), never with protection. Didn't catch anything. Western 'anti-sex' scare mongering has always been a problem. Would point out sex in the western world is much more risky. 1. You/they can't buy antibiotics over the counter. 2. She might report you for rape. 2
