Something costing Billions of Baht will not just be for show and Face.

This thing will have a purpose, and I very much doubt it will be a Weather Satellite, as its sponsored by a Military Gov,t.

Maybe one of those worthy projects , like the blimp, the aircraft carrier

without airplanes, the bomb detectors' ,the subs with no engines ,..........

If it's their first, why is it named #2? Did they try and launch #1 from their aircraft carrier is Sataheep?

What will they use to launch it.....Pla Ra fueled Som Tam ????....   Is there even a launch pad for rockets other then Bang Fai's......

  • Its a shame these people don't actually post facts as to whom exactly develeped this satellite, 20 Thais ? well guess they could have helped to keep the assembly area clean and that is about all.

Few weeks ago was talking with and american guy and asked if he works here, he said yeas with a smile and said thai space program... i started laughing then he said serious,

I asked what exactly and he told about this satalite they were building and said with all the corruption and zero its almost impossible so far as they order parts they get suppleid not from the manufacturer but who can skim the most money,

we just get supplied with incompatible parts.

Total B**l<deleted>

There are no Americans working on the THEOS-2 program - the two satellites are made by European companies (Airbus and SSTL) and the program was defined by a British falang working in Thailand.

The contract for the satellites and the ground segments was definitely not corrupted, although some people on the Thai side did try some tricks. It was probably the cleanest contract that Thailand has ever signed for a high-tech investment.

There are some other parts of the Thai space industry - mostly the Thai companies, that are less than honest but not on this program.

You - or your fictitious informer - are making things up

So take a read of this

https://news.satnews.com/2022/06/21/sstls-theos-2-smallsat-ships-to-gistda-in-thailand/#:~:text=The THEOS-2 SmallSAT is based on SSTL's CARBONITE series, for early operations from SSTL.

And from another news media it was stated that it has been developed primarily by British space technology engineers as part of a Thai/British agreement

there are in fact two satellites - one built by Airbus in France and one by SSTL (Surrey satellites) in the UK.

As part of the conditions for the satellite contract a team of Thai engineers from GISTDA - in total around 60 people - have been in France and particularly in the UK to take part in the design, integration and testing of the satellites - they have been there for around 18 months and were trained in all aspects of the spacecraft development and manufacture as a "technology transfer" package.

This is to prepare them to be able to make their own satellites in Thailand in the future.

There are also 10 processing centres for the data from the satellites including agriculture, forestry, urban planning, water management, border and maritime security etc.

Over 800 personnel from different government ministries and organisations have been trained in Thailand to use the processing centres and software - making this one of the largest training programs ever achieved in this industry anywhere in the world

Many more will be trained during the 10-year lifetime of the satellites in-orbit

The Thai government is planning to launch the first Thai satellite into space early next year,

Oh, goody! But... does it have an engine?

Thanks that is a very interesting piece of information, what a shame the Thai editorial couldn't or wouldn't post these facts themselves. I would assume giving the complexity of this work the contracts and agreements were in place prior to this current governments tenure, or the military rule by the same people prior to that ?

The original definition of the program was done in 2013 under the Yingluck government - it was agreed but the government fell shortly afterwards - it took another 5 years to get the military government to fully back the program and get through the processes and the contracts were signed in 2018 - so one of the few Thai programs that has been supported by "both sides"

Thanks for that, at least it is finally one thing that can be seen as a forward thinking move.

No word on what this satellite actually does , while up there

in space, just for show or what.

The two satellites are for remote sensing - agriculture, forestry, urban planning, maritime etc. Not just for show these are working satellites

Yes. I would think that is accurate.

Theos 1 is already up there and has been since 2008. You can read the details here if you're interested, although your facetious comment would suggest that you're not.

Then Theos 2 is obviously NOT their first and your defense of an error would say what about you exactly? :wai:

What it says about me is that I obviously look into topics more thoroughly than many. Theos 1 was build in Europe by a team which included a number of Thai engineers in a technology transfer arrangement.

Theos 2 is being built in Thailand by a Thai team and was developed by more than 20 Thai satellite engineers. So I think that Thailand can quite rightfully claim that it is their first satellite.

You may dispute that if you wish, but please don't bother me with your concerns.

There will be several experiments to further man kinds reach for the stars.

1) To monitor the rate of decay of Som-Tam in a weightless environment.

2) To mix / Ferment the perfect Pla -Rah in space.

3) To clam the first Sticky rice and mango in orbit.

Ps How can this be the first satellite for Thailand.

Thought they had Thaicom 1

a communications one.

Anyone ?

Now now, #3 is important.  Remember it was the cheese wheel that Spacex sent up in a Dragon demo capsule that really got their space program going!  Have seen the cheese wheel in a sealed glass case, was lucky enough to get a look around of the Hawthorne Facility about a year before COVID hit, impressive and efficient.  Stole a bunch of soda beverage cups with the SpaceX logo on them from the cafeteria which is 2nd floor behind the Command and Control room.
