Strategic city of Severodonetsk now under 'full Russian occupation'

Russian forces have now fully occupied the strategic Ukrainian city of Severodonetsk, the mayor has said, after weeks of heavy fighting and bombardment.

 

"The city is now under the full occupation of Russia. They are trying to establish their own order, as far as I know they have appointed some kind of commandant," Mayor Oleksandr Stryuk said.

 

It comes after Ukraine said it was pulling back its troops from the ruined city, in a significant gain for Russia as it grinds on in its offensive in the eastern Donbas region.

 

Meanwhile, pro-Russian separatists said that Moscow's troops had entered Lysychansk, a neighbouring city to Severodonetsk, and that street fighting was underway.
