Starting tomorrow, Thailand will have a five-day-long weekend as two Buddhist holidays are approaching on July 13th for Asanha Bucha Day and the 14th for the beginning of the Buddhist Lent while the 15th was announced by the government as a special holiday.

Asanha Bucha Day is celebrated annually on the full moon day of the eighth lunar month as it was the day when the Buddha held his first teaching, known as the four noble truths, after his enlightenment to his first five disciples 2,500 years ago.

Buddhist Lent begins on the day after Asahna Bucha and marks the beginning of the three–month period where all monks should not travel and stay in a particular place or their temple, where they can shelter from the sun, storms, and rain, for study and meditation.

No booze guys, for two days...

BTW would anyone know for sure if the Kings birthday on the 28th will be dry too?

Yes, let the monks do it, and the rest of us normal people get on with our lives, Thais & farangs.

Don't some people in UK & USA celebrate some kind of 'Lent' and eat pancakes on the Tuesday and nowt else for 40 days celebrating when some geezer went away for a while to see the Devil.   555

No shouldn't be, it is a celebration day. Closure days usually limited to Buddhist celebrations and elections.

Why is alcohol banned for two days this week but not on others? Buddhism either allows alcohol or it doesn't. This week, it's okay on Tuesday and Friday but not on Wednesday and Thursday.

Not that any ban matters anyway. Those who want to ignore it will ignore it.

Official Buddhist days as determined by the moon and days in lieu and a government extra day. Something like that!

Thailand, the hub of holidays.

This long holiday is not for everyone.. :whistling:

Subject to licensing laws, time of day ?

used to use Fuji a lot in pattaya Big-C , lunch time., but got tired of the  licensing laws and noisy Thai people.

stopped going about 7 years ago.

Why? Do schools teach now what was missed in the past 2 years?

No booze to be purchased... but nothing about consumed from stock.

But still, my dear local Mom & Pop always comes to the rescue should I run out.

Only good news on the long holidays is  less traffic here in Bangkok

Out for my walking exercise don't have to worry about crossing roads

Especially motor bikes????

Next door sells beer, ice and sundries.

Missus will abstain for 3 months, fortunately no problem with me not.

"The same procedure as last year, Miss Sophie?"

Miss Sophie replies "The same procedure as every year, James".

Too true. My son is only getting the Wednesday off.

And he works for one of the King's companies.

A colleague long ago gave up drinking Miller Beer for lent and switched to whiskey…. which first day

of lent @10 of use went to the local watering hole for drink and snacks during  happy hour. In her skirt

decided to do cartwheels forgetting she had no drawers… went down hill from there for 3 months…

Sadly, down here in Pattaya, it sort of swings the other way!

Here, here !

Actually, we should all make the effort to support these shops as much as possible.

My "local" is pretty grubby and somewhat limited for choice compared to the 7-11 just 200m further down the road but I try to pop in there as often as possible for basics. Better to support a local independent business than simply sticking even more money in the CP coffers.

They really shone through during the ridiculous alcohol sale ban (2020?) and agreed to deliver a case of Leo to my house. I could hear the bottles clinking from a distance as they approached for delivery and was amused to see they had the whole pick-up filled with boxes of beer.

Clearly, the entire neighbourhood was thirsty !

2 days off work, and cant go out to enjoy a beer.........????
