Mum, 66, in ICU in Chonburi after cobra spits venom in her eye

Thai Rath reported that a 66 year old mother is in ICU in hospital in Chonburi after suffering from cobra venom that a snake spat in her eye.

 

In Na Pa sub-district Chanidapha, 39, said she screamed out for her mum when she was resting in her bedroom.

 

Mum arrived with a stick but she was no match for the cobra.

 

Local firemen managed to get the snake out from under a wardrobe in 20 minutes.

 

Wattana, 66, remains in a serious condition in ICU.

 

Noppaporn, 29, a fireman, said that experts should always be called to deal with snakes.

 

Venom in the eye can cause blindness and if it induces seizures before medical help can be sought, even death.

Wow, I never new that the venom could be that bad without the bite.

 

I've never seen one in our area (NE Thailand). Do they just wander around or hide under rocks. 

 

With that said I'll probably stumble on one tomorrow.

Habitat 

 

Only seen the monocle and king cobra when I lived on Koh Samui.

They are attracted to food, keep some cats at home so they'll catch the mice and rats. If you have snake food around your house you'll get snakes.

They hang off trees at eye level.

You need more than a stick with a Cobra

Fortunately our house and surroundings are kept tidy.

 

Don't need cats as the locals eat the rats.

I once chased away a Cobra that had taken up residence in the kitchen…with a broom.  as I pushed her out into the garden she turned her head defiantly towards me, but I managed to handle the situation.  I must admit that my blood pressure and adrenaline rose during the fight.

After that, I found information in Google and this is what you need to know if you try to fight with a Cobra; 

They direct the venom by analyzing the movement of their victims and predicting where they will be next.

 

The Spitting cobras first defend themselves by following the movement of their attacker.  However, at the moment of the taunt that triggers the expulsion of the venom, the reptile predicts where its attacker's eyes will be in the next 200ms and points where it is sure to hit its target.

 

200 milliseconds ! Simply incredible. ????

GF told me a few months ago that there were spitting Cobras in Thailand. I didn't believe her. I thought they were only in Africa...until I looked it up.

 

I remember Steve Irwin on one of his shows wearing sunglasses or some form of eye protection, and encouraging one to spit at him. Just to show how accurate they are.
