The US Department of Homeland Security has been negotiating with the Denver Art Museum for the return of three historic artefacts to Thailand, Deputy Government Spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said today (Monday).

The three items are the Srivijaya-era Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara and two bronze statues of the Dvaravati period, from the 7th to 11th centuries AD.

Last year, the Department of Homeland Security helped to secure the return, from the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, of two Khmer stone lintels, believed to have originated from Prasat Nong Hong in Buri Ram province and Prasat Khao Lon in Sa Kaeo province.

Who in turn will return them to their rightful owners?

So Thailand gonna give the emerald Buddha back to Laos?  Asking for a friend...

If you read the history section of the following, the Emerald Buddha was in the Lanna kingdom of Chiang Mai when the crown prince of Lan Xang came to rule Chiang Mai due to the lack of a male heir there, because his mother, the queen of Lan Xang, was the daughter of the late king of Chiang Mai. Subsequently the Emerald Buddha was taken to Luang Prabang when the crown prince acceded to the Lan Xang throne.

So Chiang Mai has a superior claim to Luang Prabang's over rights to the Emerald Buddha.

Just to be clear, the origin of these artifacts are not Thai. The creators of these items belong to the Kingdom of Srijivaya ( Malay) and Dvaravati ( Mon).  Just like all the ancient wats dotted throughout Thailand that were built before the 12th century belongs to the Khmer civilization.

Shhhh.....don't wanna confuse 'em with their obsession to refer to everything from these auspicious eras as Thai - even when they're not.
