Thailand grapples with allowing more Chinese landowners

Stupidest idea ever. Thailand will be colonized in short order and I don't see the Thais even like the Chinese very much. Don't follow the West. Diversity is not a strength.

Thailand is already colonized by the wealthy family clans, who own 70% of the county's wealth. By continously playing the xenophobic card, the wealth gap has silently grown to be one of the most unequal in the world. Thai eat Thai. It's the super rich that dont want to share their extreme wealth with either the local Thai or foreigners. Thats why most xenophobic remarks, made by authorities, is only serving the rich Thai families. The price of land has gone up a couple hundred percent over the last 10 years, and its not the 'Ai Farang' driving up the prices. We sold some land the other day, bought in 2008, at a 1,200% margin. Sold to Thais! We get regular requests to sell more, but won't. Cash or liquidity is vaporizing.

It's disgusting to me that after all these years of barring foreigners from owning Thai dirt, that they are now considering it for the CHINESE.

The Peua Thai Party, Thailand’s leading opposition party, opposes the scheme. Arguing that nearly 80% of Thai people do not own any land, they claim that allowing foreign ownership will only benefit those who own the majority of land — the upper-middle class and elites.

Yes.

The chinese often get their hands on land by Thais defaulting on loans  ,, Many "chinese" hold Thai passports  / citizenship as they were born here!

Indeed, what have the Chinese got that the rest of the foreigners haven't?

Investing 40 million baht (US$1.1 million) in Thai property, securities or funds for a period of at least three years is now one of many preconditions for foreign nationals to own up to one rai (approximately 1,600 square meters) of land beginning in September 2022.

Which is more of a deterrent than a lure.

I know to own land or property in thailand very strict rules.Thai ownership  is 51 percent i believe.the rest is the farang. From what i hear in australia they have brought up lots of land for milk etc and now it all goes back to china. What i  have read not everyone is  very happy about this.So thailand must be careful too.Cambodia sold they soul down sth for big hotels casino,s now, private beaches where before public and very nice to visit.Lots of chinese just staying in the hotel gambling and whatever else.So just be careful  in opening the gates for chinese and buying land, just think if some of the islands were sold and then you see a complete chinese resort with hotels and casino,s. not what the tourist trade or thais really want.but a few thais will be rich it for it

Why does the article title single out Chinese, when in fact every other nationality has the same rights to invest?

Very dangerous..........It's not the Chinese citizen buying ...it;s the CHINESE GOVERNMENT

Perhaps because the article is written by PREM SINGH GILL, a third generation Indian here and we all know of the general Indian prejudice against the Chinese, almost as bad as some of the posters on here.

"now-suspended Prime Minister Prayut Chan-ocha"

1) you forgot to add "General" and "Defence Minister" in his ever-growing title

2) the government's fooling around with the 50.0000000000001% or more in any juristic entity kept i.e. Volkswagen from not investing hunderts of millions of Euros in Thailand; countless previous PMs travelled to Wolfsburg, were welcome and ........ sent home without anything

3) the same set of governments has not realized yet, that neither the Chinaman nor the dirty Farang can roll up and pack a piece of land into a suitcase and disappear to foreign lands with it. So, why would a government prefer the Red Brethren in the North compared to any other nation elsewhere?

4) be warned over the latter as China meanwhile legally bought themselves into agriculture, infrastructure and/or logistic domestics of survival importance; Australia, Lao PDR, Pakistan, Sri Lanka as well as countless African and South American "deals" shortchanged the respective governments in favour of China ......... without China forcing them to do/sell/rent/lease out anything.

Take your time and get your homework done before the pens are readied ????

Foreigners can buy houses in Malaysia, but I think they have to be valued at around $100,000+

Well done "sherlock" They are "Thai"   However their extended families may not be and who knows where their loyalties actually lie.  A little like muslims that are born in the UK

The Thais bow to the Chinese. They may be stingy and rude, but at least they 'look Thai'...

If you want a piece of land marry wisely.

My wife and I of many, many  years have a few plots of land dotted around Thailand and we consider ourselves the land owners (note the use of a plural pronoun please), my wife's name maybe on the title deed, but is still our land.

If we divorce well tbh I would be more worried about the failure of my marriage than a few plots of land which eventually (divorce aside),  will be handed down to our children when we pass.

All this anger about foreigners not being able to own land. Marry wisely and for the right reasons and you can own your own plot of land.

Off-topic (a bit) but isn't the Thai elite from Chinese descent?

Yes, all of them to the very very top. If they are not of Chinese descent they are not considered by the Elite as being part of the Elite. Elitism at it's finest

I would presume that most investors would just be private individual investors, while a good junk of Chinese investors might be corporations, possibly even owned by, or affiliated with the Chinese state.

Wonder why that is. Could it be because the Chinese are hard workers as opposed to the striking, slackers in the west?

Ahh, so there is some sort of broader conspiracy going on, generations of Chinese are moving to Thailand, living there, then having children, just so the children can buy land for the mother country, give me a break.

Just look at neighbouring Cambodia.   Sihanoukville has gone Chinese completekly, Sien reap is fast going that way.

Its all part of China's aim to control all of Asia, and then at some time in the future. face off against the Muslims who are infiltrating the rest of the world!

I don’t have any problems with the Chinese as a people. The CCP well that’s a different story. But you all have to remember China, like the west right now hasn’t got a pot to <deleted> in , we just don’t hear too much about it.  They have serious problems already with property developers in their own backyard , I don’t see them rushing into Los to buy.

"Thailand grapples with allowing more Chinese landowners."

Most of the land and most of the businesses in Thailand are already owned by Chinese from earlier immigration waves. They also control the bureaucracy and nearly all MPs are Chinese.

The new wave of Chinese landowners use Thai proxies and fake Thai ID cards.  They don't wait for new laws.

The law under discussion is not a new law anyway. It was an amendment to the Land Code in 1999. Compared to existing Chinese ownership of land and ongoing illegal purchases by Chinese, 1 rai of residential land under extremely restrictive conditions will make no difference to the equation whatsoever, if they revive that existing law with new ministerial regulations which is what is proposed but not clearly articulated by the government or media.
