Husband went to attack ex wife "because she was going to find a farang husband"

Daily News Thai Caption: Reconciliation failed

The thought that a Thai man's ex wife was going to find a "phua farang" (western husband) proved too much for a drunk guy in the north east, reported Daily News.

Chutiphon, 40, tanked himself up on booze and jumped over the wall of a house in Phakdeeburirak Road in Nangrong district of Buriram. He was armed with a knife.

A furious argument developed with his ex wife Suthanee, 36. The couple split four months ago.

Seeing things were headed in a bad direction Chutiphon's former mother-in-law Sommai, 60, tried to intervene.

She was stabbed in the right side of the ribs.

Chutiphon still tried to attack his ex wife and his 18 year old son.

The young man "graaped" the feet of his father begging him to stop which he eventually did.

He fled on a motorcycle and was arrested at the bus station trying to flee the area.

The wife said she would have no forgiveness for her ex. The mother in law is out of danger but still in hospital.

Chutiphon, in tears, said that he had ordained into the monkhood in 2005 but left of his own volition.

He admitted he and his wife had had constant arguments and that he like to drink but they carried on for the sake of their two children.

But when she said she wanted to take up with a foreigner, that was too much to bear.

He spent every waking hour thinking about that before drinking himself into a stupor to embolden himself and going to see his wife armed with a knife.

He said he didn't mean to hurt anyone, he was trying to reconcile.

"It was the booze," he said.

Maybe the wife really did imagine herself hooking up with a white guy, but when Thais use the term "pua farang" the focus is usually on the financial escape from poverty he might offer, rather than necessarily on skin color. I hope no one leaves believing Thai men are all insanely jealous and threatened by you, because they're not.

That was a pretty ball-busting comment the wife made, no doubt intended to wound. But more often than not these "pua farang" comments are little more than whimsical day dreams rather than true aspirations.

The guy obviously has a drinking problem and stabbing the mother-in-law in the ribs was definitely a dick move, but I still feel sorry for him. I wish the mother-in-law a speedy recovery and I hope the guy is able to straighten his life out.

fled on motorbike, then arrested at bus station. You would have been much harder to find, traveling, around the Buriram countryside on a motor bike.

Trying to reconcile while holding a knife, obviously that way didn't work.

No... I don’t see the deep underlying racism at all... I just see the ’trigger in the headline begging for attention and clicks’...

This is simple fragile man syndrome and the fact that his ex-left him....    His desperate behaviour would have very likely been exactly the same had there been no mention of a forienger.

So he was completely in his right mind (sane), and was not influenced by jealousy to go after his ex-wife....So in your view it was just the alcohol........amazing

Quite a reconciliation. Perhaps he should be hired as a hostage negotiator, with those skills in diplomacy.

Real men try to mend things, and when it is apparent things are not going to work out, they walk away and wish their woman well. Tiny men, who have the emotional development of a 13 year old, succumb to desperation, like a bad child.

I agree with you that there was no underlying racism in the article.

The Thai language Daily News article was merely reporting the facts surrounding the incident. The take-away from the article was that provoking your intoxicated ex-husband into a jealous rage by threatening to replace him with a rich foreigner probably isn't a very smart idea. There was no implication that getting involved with foreign men was asking for trouble. I did not find the slightest anti-foreigner sentiment in the Daily News article.

While by no means condoning his behavior, the Daily News article presented him in a far more humanistic light. In contrast, I found that the AseanNews translation of the Daily News article presented the estranged husband in a much less flattering light than the original Thai article. Perhaps it all boils down to the fact that the Daily News article was written for a Thai audience while the Asean News translation was written for a (largely male) foreign audience.

To illustrate, Thais, both men and women, would probably be more willing to empathize with the husband's anger about the "pua farang" comment than most foreigners, and that more sympathetic response comes across in the Daily News article, but far less so than in the AseanNews translation.

Whereas the estranged husband's drinking, the downward spiral of his life, his tearful remorse and attempts to remind people that he had once been a better person, and his decision to stop the rampage after his son begged him to were presented in the Thai language article in such a way to humanize him despite the gravity of his crime, I found the presentation in the AseanNews article to be less sympathetic, and presented in such a way that the estranged husband's jealous rage over the "pua farang" comment might be seen as source of amusement for foreign male readers and a not-so-subtle invitation to heap scorn on Thai men.

I agree

It really is the booze

No drug has done more damage to the families of the world while mostly flying under the radar of the law worldwide.

But why I ask would she want a Falang husband ?

Funny,  a bit off?

In my hay day not too long ago????

I use to see a regular at a GoGo, in the beginning she had no man so we spent a lot of time together.  One night she broke the news that she now had a guy living with her so our time was limited no problem it wasn't like she didn't have any other customers.  The Thai guy knew from the get go she went with customer particular Farang as long as she didn't go LT,  so I continue just adjusted my schedule. One night I get a call I go down to her work she is crying her friends said BF beat her up I ask why? Girlfriend said while the Thai guy was doing his thing with her she blurted out my name?  When he went through her Phone " Line " realized I wasn't a farang he went crazy.  LOL
