Additional air quality monitoring stations to be set up in Chiang Mai

Two air quality monitoring stations will be set up, in addition to the existing four in Chiang Mai province, to monitor smoke and dust from forest fires, which are expected to begin sooner than in previous years.

 

Director of the Environment and Pollution Control Office in Chiang Mai, Pradit Seesai, said today (Wednesday) that forest fires are expected sooner as a result of the premature arrival of the dry season, as he cited a forest fire on Huai Yap mountain, bordering Ban Thi district of Lamphun Province and Mae On district of Chiang Mai, which was reported on November 20th by members of the paramotor club in Chiang Mai.

 

Smoke from the burning of farm waste was also detected in nearby areas, he added.

So we need more monitoring stations to tell us what we already know. Get out there and do something constructive instead of navel gazing all day, all week, all year.

That sounds like the annual fires start automatically when the dry season arrives ... but the do not start automatically , most are lit by people trying to profit from it . ( mushrooms , crop burning etc ... )

These people realize well the damage they do to the health of everybody living over there , but they don't seem to care ...

Hefty fines and prison for them ! If they cannot be found , fine the land owners . ( in case of crop burning ) .

Chiang Mai has a reputation for being one of the world's most ( air ) polluted cities . That will certainly not attract visitors . And it is the same every year without authorities ever showing a real will or desire to change that .

What actions have been taken to mitigate fire/smoke?

 

Have they yielded any results, except for lower emission this year probably from lower demand?

In other words, It's feild burning season again! ???? Time to suck it down with a smile behind your little covid masks like good little buffalo.

It shows you, how powerful those corn and rice buying agencies are.

The haze is a consequence of burning fields which have been harvested from their corn and rice. Take  a few of those hundreds of helicopters all those government agencies fly their big kids and VIPPPPPs around and identify the location of the fire. Next, get the details of the land owners (another government agency, so it cannot be TOOOO difficult to find out who owns the plot) and fine them with 20% of the value assessed by the department of land. Said money is to good use for public hospitals in the neighborhood as that is the place, where all those coughing and sicks "neighbours" of those ignorant land kings live. 

I would assume that within less than a burning season all this comes to a screeching halt. The helicopters can go back to the warehouses and shuttling the local bigwigs ......

Your call; quite obviously nobody really wants to do anything about it. 

Interesting might be though, that tens of thousands (including my family) decided NOT to move to Chiang Mai for this very reason; if I need pollution and coughing, then its Bangkok for Thailand and an array of choices in South Asian countries like Pakistan or India. Any more questions?

Yes. And then what? Everyone knows that smoke is invisible so its source can't be traced and people arrested for setting illegal fires.

Anyone with chest ailments should stay well clear of Chiang Mai to my mind.  Anyhows, why wouldn't you want to live by the sea?   Its not necessary to live in a seedy seaside resort, there are some lovely options. Just my two pence worth.
