Should I let my drivers license from back home expire and just have the Thai DL?

Yes it does require you to be a resident of Great Britain

Yep... I understand that...  BUT... what duration of ‘staying at your address in the UK’ is acceptable to be considered ‘resident’ ???

Is simply having an address that you stay at sometimes, good enough ?

OR, is there some stipulation of days ?

If you are physically present in the UK for 183 days or more in a tax year you will be resident in the UK for that year.

I dunno if that 183 days have to be continuous.

You are confusing HMRC 183, and DVLA 185.

however for both of them the total time is relevant not the contiguous period.

I wanted to renew (or rather move from pink paper to plastic) drivers license a few years back in EU, and was told I can't get it as my address is outside EU. So I had no choice but to drop that and get a Thai drivers license.

A friend there has a Thai wife who has a Thai drivers license and wanted to get one locally there - no, not accepted. She would have to go and do all the theoretical exams, practice drive with instructor and then pass the driving exam. She can still use Thai license with international driving permit, but it means coming to Thailand to issue IDP every year.

So if you can keep one from home country, you should.
