However, Israel never offered full sovereign statehood and as it is well known by now, even acted to sabotage Palestinian unity by funding or facilitating Hamas. The Palestinians had fought and died side by side with the British against the Ottoman Empire in WW I, because they were promised statehood, which was one of the biggest betrayals in human history, yet nothing compared with what came next. The Palestinians welcomed Jewish refugees with open arms and full of compassion, knowing that most nations had closed their borders, turned ships away (in the EVIAN Conference in France delegates from 32 countries discussed the Jewish refugee crisis, with most of them—including the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom—refusing to accept large numbers of them.) What a happy end for those desperate Jews.
