Thai authorities to crack down on cannabis parties and drunk driving during New Year’s

National — Cannabis cannot be used as part of New Year celebrations, warned the Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine (DTAM).

DTAM director-general Thongchai Lertwilairattanapong said yesterday, December 20th, that cannabis parties during New Year festivals are not allowed and that they will dispatch their staff to inspect any venues that are reported to be organizing such parties immediately. Thongchai reminded the public that cannabis should only be for medical use with the aid of a doctor and not used for parties or events.

 

Thongchai said vendors must be granted a permit to sell cannabis. If they fail to do so or throw cannabis parties, legal consequences will surely follow.

 

When reporters asked him if authorities will be inspecting suspicious parties that may be associated with cannabis, Thongchai responded police will be tied up with monitoring other New Year activities such as drinking that will increase the risk of road accidents.

It's extraordinary how a select group of Thai professionals and doctors have access to data on this plant that has eluded the rest of the planet for decades. I've been smoking since the 80's and I have never heard of a cannabis party in my entire life! 
And why would anyone want to promote more alcohol consumption on NYE anyways?  That's what will happen if less cannabis is around.

So why are there cannabis shops on almost every corner in some areas, when a pharmacy surely would have been able to dispense this medicine?

This is not an accurate assessment of the legal status of cannabis use. Recreational use is NOT illegal. Yes, there are limitations on recreational use.

 

Sending mixed-messages does more harm.

Not sure we should take this obscure departments view into consideration. The Department of Thai Traditional and Alternative Medicine. Please tell me they don't have a say in cannabis laws or any laws for that matter.

Yes, at some point they were requiring people to stay in these quarantine hotels.... I did not think it ridiculous. I welcomed the idea, people needed to get back to their homes and families, and this was a way that could happen, without infecting the country for those already living here... of which I was one.
